Tip Video: Photo RAW 2018 Processing Workflow

This is the first in a series of tips videos I’m sharing with the Plus community. My goal for these videos is to help you keep a structured workflow in mind both in the field capturing images as well as and later in your editing work. In this first video, I’m going to walk you through my initial processing workflow in Photo RAW 2018 while sharing a few tips and thoughts about what order to use the powerful tools this software has to offer.

Your Photo. Our Look: Photo Raw 2018

Back by popular demand, here’s the first Your Photo. Our Look video using the all new Photo Raw 2018. We asked the On1 Plus community to send us their images to edit as if they were ours. It wasn’t easy to choose from all the amazing images, but these three caught my eye and I had a blast using Photo Raw 2018 exclusively to do the work.

Time-lapse Live Q&A & Summer Photo Contest Winners!

In this Live Q&A Laurie Excell and I announce the Summer Photo Challenge winners and run through some of our favorite images. It was an incredible group of submissions everyone. Great job! If your image was chosen please send me a message in the Ask A Coach forum or send me a message with where to send your Black Rapid strap. We also talked a fair bit about this months subject of time-lapse photography, took some general photography questions and talked about some of our favorite locations and why we return to them year after year. We had a little technical glitch with our webinar software in the middle of the event  which we apologize for. Thanks so much to those of you who hung in there while we got the system back online. We’ve cut that downtime out of the recorded version.

Time-lapse: Androids, Intervals & Shutter Speed

Laurie did a great video last week on capturing time-lapse footage with an iPhone. I wanted to showcase how I use my Android (a Pixel) to capture time-lapse and do a little comparison between the time-lapse output of a smartphone vs a big camera. It’s a short video, but somehow I manage to wander into a discussion of determining what interval to choose for your time-lapse as well as optimizing time-lapse shutter speeds. Below the break I added a little cheat sheet for the interval calculation:

TOTAL ECLIPSE COMPOSITE EDITING TUTORIAL

That was amazing! The eclipse has come and gone and I’m still buzzed just remembering how cool totality was. The predawn rush to beat traffic and the 6-hour, 40-mile drive home were worth it. Now I understand how eclipse chasers catch the bug.
My goal from the beginning was to enjoy the eclipse with family, friends and my workshop students while capturing a composite landscape image of it moving through its phases over an oak tree. In the video above I explain how I photographed this  and showcase the simple compositing technique I used in both Photo Raw 2017.6 and Lightroom/Photoshop. It’s really easy and it will also work for blending multiple night images into star trails.
If you want to hear more about my eclipse experience and see more photos and video head over to the latest post on my blog.

Hudson's 24-Frame Street Photography Challenge

Blake and I asked you in the Plus to community to give us a photo challenge and you responded by sending us out to photograph the streets of our own cities in no more than 24 frames. It was a tough challenge for a couple of photographers like us who normally photograph landscapes, wildlife and outdoor adventure. It took me back to the days when I did travel photography articles with film. That’s looking back a long ways now…

City & Street in 24-frames Reverse Challenge

We asked you in the Plus community to choose a reverse photo challenge mission for Blake and I this month and we were blown away by how many great suggestions you came back with. Again and again we heard a couple of themes pop up. Lots of you wanted to see us work with a limited number of frames. Still another group wanted us to focus on street or city photography. Blake and I got together and decided to combine these two great ideas into the City & Street in 24 Frames Reverse Photo Challenge.
