February Plus Photo Critiques are open

We’re now accepting submissions for the February 2021 Photo Critiques, which are open to all Plus members. You can upload one photo for critique to the gallery, via our submission page. (The guidelines for images are reproduced below.) In an attempt to keep the length of the critiques video shorter (and hopefully, more watchable to all), we’re going to keep the critiques open for a week, closing this month on February 9. (And yes, we’ll also critique the four photos we somehow missed from the January critiques — sorry about that.)

If you’re new to Plus, and haven’t yet submitted a photo to the critiques gallery, we highly encourage it: we love seeing everyone’s work, and the critiques are a great way to help expand your skills. If you would like to see what the critiques are all about, you can see the January critiques video in the ON1 Plus Video Library.

ON1 Plus Critiques Photo Requirements:

The long side of your photo should be cropped to 1920px
JPEG format (must have .jpg extension)
Size: 2 MB file size limit
Quality: 7 (or medium)
Submit one image only, please

ON1 Photo RAW 2021.5 Splashscreen

Photographing on the Oregon Coast is always an adventure. You make the two-hour trek to the beach and hope for the best. Typically the biggest obstacle is the wind but at the Oregon Coast it can also be rain and cold even in the middle of summer. My last trip to Manzanita, Oregon was for a series of Ballet dancers on the Beach. I teamed up with our local Ballet Studio for this adventure. We booked the trip in the middle of summer and yet the day we were to take photos it rained. As in poured down rain ALL DAY LONG. So much planning and organizing went into this and the rain through quite the wrench in our day. We held out though and waited until about 6 pm where we finally decided to give it a go so the day was not a complete waste. Armed with umbrellas we headed down to the beach.

May Plus Critiques Recap

We had some stellar photos posted this month in the ON1 Plus Critiques gallery. We also saw a group of new folks posting, and we saw a lot more activity in the comments, both of which we love to see. Thanks to everyone for participating!

Hudson and I went through the gallery, and chose 30 photos that we felt showcased good work, or offered some teaching moments that could help us all. And, since we can’t critique every photo submitted, we have gone through and commented on many of the photos submitted. And, with that, here are a few of our favorite photos from the month.

3253 Berry Picker, by Paule Hjertaas

Paule’s shot of a Hepatic Tanager with a berry in its beak is spectacular: the face, eye and the berry are perfectly in focus, as is the claw holding the bird to the branch. And the composition is wonderful too, with a lovely blurred background, and the right amount of negative space at the bottom right of the frame. Just wonderful, Paule.
