ON1 Plus Fall Photo Critique

Thank you to all those that submitted a photo. We have closed submission so Matt and Hudson can begin the production process. We will post the videos very soon!
Each month all Plus members have the opportunity to submit a photo for critique. And every single photo uploaded gets critiqued by one of the coaches. It’s just another perk of being a Plus member. Learn more about ON1 Plus.

Fall? It’s Spring in my part of the world.

Sorry, we’re not trying to alienate folks in the southern hemisphere! 🙂 You’re welcome to post a photo of fall or spring, it will be critiqued regardless.

In WI, we are still waiting for winter! The snow we had melted in the rain that followed.

I just returned from Hayward , WI where I spent 10 days in the woods. The snow days were actually warmer. The wind made some of the other days a bit cold. I should have brought my camera as there were some beautiful afternoon and night shots available.

On this side of the pond we call it autumn and don’t use “awesome” as a punctuation mark 😉

As a Brit living in BC, I would agree- I have never used the word awesome in 7 plus years! I mix between the words, Fall and Autumn…anyhow Chris Mullett(do you have one? ) – you are a cheeky monkey 🙂

New to Plus. Can someone explain how this critique works? Are the photos in the gallery ones that have already submitted for critique? Or just photos that were uploaded to the regular gallery and tagged “fall”?
What does a critique involve? How the photo was taken? How the photo was edited? Can we submit before and afters? Curious to know more. Thanks.

Hello Tiemater, Yes I’m sorry for the lack of information. The way the critique works is pretty simple. First, we open a dedicated Gallery for members to upload a photo. The submission period is only open a few days, and then we close the gallery for submission. Our coaches then randomly divide up the pictures and record videos of giving their critiques. Once they’ve finished, we post the critique videos for everyone in the community to watch. Go watch past critiques and learn more as to exactly how a critique is given by the coaches. There is another Plus Gallery that remains open all the time and is just for sharing your photos and commenting on others. Often members of the community will post in the Discussion forum and solicit a critique from other members. Hope that helps!

I can see where posting a before and after (as one photo) might be helpful. Say one has a photo that is unique–but not a good photo–because it was a unique opportunity or taken in less than ideal conditions, for example. While the creator may have tried to improve the photo through editing, the “critiquer” might have additional suggestions to make the editing work out better. Just a thought–maybe for a future critique session.

That is a great idea, this type of critique occurs in the forums among members all the time. Welcome to ON1 Plus!

Hi! To add to what Nathan said. A photo review/critique is meant to be a review of the photo as it stands when you share it. It really has to be independent of before/after, the story behind it, where you could or couldn’t shoot while taking it, and any other circumstances. Why? Because the normal viewer of the photo would never have this information, so you want us to look at it with fresh eyes.
There are definitely places, as Nathan pointed out, that you can point a story and ask people for opinions or advice based on your circumstances. But the critiques are just a little bit different.
      Thanks!

For the past year we were told to limit ourselves to ONE photo posted for critique (what I did) even though most of us would like to get more advices on how to improve. It has never been really enforced and I see, this time again, that one person posted 9 (nine) pictures!
If it’s one then please take measures to limit submissions.

      Thank you Gilbert,
There is not a way to prevent members from uploading more than one photo. I will make sure to update the text to make it a bit more clear. I’m sure it was by accident.

Yes it was me to post the nine photos I think. And I overlooked that you only should post one photo. I thought the reviewers might pick what they like best to review and criticize. Sorry for that. Next time I know. Feel free to delete all but one photo from the gallery.
However – may be because of my mistake – I can’t access any discussions and forums and galleries anymore even though I’m logged in.

Yes, I was having the same problem yesterday. Was very confusing. Tried to submit a ticket to support and it showed it as never being submitted. Today when I checked my email, it showed it had “gone through” 3 times. Plus I emailed directly.
      Maybe an overloaded website?

I love the idea of critiques and is without doubt the #1 thing I miss most of college. I never learned more even if it was the most grueling, embarrassing or rarely uplifting experience in my college life. I look forward to it here.
As far as imagery, are we to upload an image that we think we succeeded with, but need assurance that we’re going in the right direction or one we struggled with and still not happy with? I’ve been shooting since the mid 80’s and have always struggled with an appealing composition. I’ve fought it in my other art, wood sculpture as well. Whatever I upload I just want to make it count.

Nathan, you say above that “we open a dedicated gallery” for the critique photos. It seems to me, however, that whether I use the link in your above post or the one to the general gallery among all the other Plus links, I end up in the same gallery.

    1. Nathan Keudell

      Nathan KeudellDecember 1, 2016

Yes, there is a dedicated Gallery for uploading photos to be critiqued. However, the photos uploaded to the Critique Gallery will also upload to the Main Gallery. Additionally, when you attempt to browse in detail view on the Fall Photo Gallery and click the “Back to Gallery” button, it will take you back to the main gallery. I apologize for the confusion and am working with my web developers now to find a solution. I hope that helps clear things up! Thanks for being a part of ON1 Plus.

🙁 Takes me right back to the Join On1 Plus page. I went back to the Submit the Photo link to see if it had been fixed, but that link still takes me back to the “Join” page.

    Nathan,
Why is it that “Caption” information shows up in Gallery posts, but Descriptions don’t?

    1. Nathan Keudell

Nice catch, the description field must be hibernating for the winter 🙂
A member of my web team is looking into it. Thanks for mentioning it.

Could an admin please delete one of my images that I uploaded twice by mistake. The image is titled “Overlooked”. The reason for my duplicate upload is when I hit “Upload Photo” I got a hover icon. That icon was a circle with a slash through it, making me think that it didn’t take.
Is there any way in the future that we could delete our images ourselves, if we choose to, up until the final submittal date?

    1. Nathan Keudell

      Nathan KeudellDecember 2, 2016

I have removed the duplicate, thanks!
