Hopefully you’ve found the Photo RAW Project by now and have been engaging with our discussions on all of the great ideas. To date, we’ve had over 200 submissions since we launched the project just over a ooonth ago. It has become an indispensable tool for me and helps me plan what features to tackle next. I thought I would share some of my favorite ideas directly from the project. A Dano’s Top 10 list if you would…
Local Adjustments with Intelligent Brush — “A feature I will like is local adjustments (exposure, clarity, sharpening, shadows, etc.) with an intelligent brush that finds automatically the edges, like in Camera Raw.” Great news! This is one we are working on right now and are pretty exited about. The new Local Adjustments tab will let you use the Brush, including the Perfect Brush, and the gradient masking bug to selectively apply local adjustments that can be edited inside of Develop and Effects with Photo RAW.- Fuji X-Trans Processing — We see this request almost everyday. Photographers want great processing from their Fuji X-Trans sensors. For those of you who aren’t familiar with these sensors, the RGB filter pattern over the sensor doesn’t use the the normal RGBG Bayer pattern. It uses a unique one that requires a special debayering algorithm. We are working on our decoding of X-Trans RAW photos now. I hope to have some examples soon for everyone to look at. Photographers also want to take advantage of the film-based looks that Fuji offers in-camera. This is something that we will start work on this winter and will be part of a free update next year.
- Multiple Monitors — “A must. Main, color corrected screen, for editing – full screen photo. All the toolboxes are one the second screen!” Today about 15% of our users have more than one display. It would be great to let you put the controls on one display and large preview on the main display or to have thumbnails on one and big preview on the other.
- Reduce PSD Size — A common refrain we hear is that the PSD files that we create are really big. Well, yes they are. Photoshop compresses PSDs. Currently we don’t do that, but we will be soon. However, all this may be moot as well. With the new non-destructive raw photo editor ON1 Photo RAW, you won’t be making PSD files nearly as often, only when you export out a photo to work in Layers or Photoshop. Most of the time all of your edits will be stored as instructions, taking almost no space, and your original photo will be left untouched.
- Lightroom Catalog Import — Working with Lightroom data is the biggest request we have since we announced. We will develop a special tool to import your Lightroom presets and albums as well as interpret your Lightroom edits on a photo. This will be part of a free update in the winter.
- Versions — Call them versions, snapshots or virtual copies they all serve the same function, to have multiple settings for the same photo without having to make a copy of the original. This is a really handy feature to many and one that we will be adding as part of a free update in the Winter.
- Haze — “I have come to rely on dehaze to a certain extent on almost all my new images. Please include it. Thanks.” We have had a ton of comments on haze or dehaze. We are definitely working on that now and it will be in the fall release of Photo RAW. One of our concerns with it is giving you the control over how much the saturation increases as you decrease the haze. See this blog post for more details.
- Panorama Stitching — There’s a great conversion on this topic in the Photo RAW Project. This is something we will be looking at in the future, along with it’s technological sisters, HDR merging and aligning layers. No timeframe yet but we are thinking about it.
Perspective and Lens Correction — ON1 Photo RAW will add a new Transform pane which will help reduce barrel distortion as well a correct perspective and leveling.- Identify the Sharpest in a Set of Photos — This has always been a time consuming process for photographers. I remember hours spent on a light table with loupe picking out the the best frame. Digital photography hasn’t made this much easier. We are working on better ways to compare photos such as a new compare view which will allow you to view view, zoom and pan multiple photos at the same time as well as new sharpness overlay that will color-code the sharp areas in your photos.

I would really love to see you license Nik’s control point technology from Google. There are many times when that technology just speeds up workflow as compared to making layers, painting something in or out etc.
I would also like to see some integration with Photo Mechanic.

A great feature about Nikon NX2 that distinguished that software. I was so disappointed with NX-D that I started looking at other options. The recent purchase of a Nikon D500 caused even greater frustration as there were few RAW options. I would love to see Control Point technology or a similar capability that would survive a patent issue.

Hi Dan,
I have one request that would help save hard drive space. Having the ability to put ON1 Extras on another drive and tell ON1 where to look for them. Just like being able to put a Lightroom catalog on another drive and you direct lightroom where to look for this. As you add textures and presets, this file grows, like a Lightroom catalog. Most hard drives, SSD’s will fill up rather quickly. I have experienced this issue and had to find a work around to get space back on my hard drive.
Oh one more request. Having the ability to use 3rd party plugins with Photo Raw would really be awesome!

I would also like to see this. I keep a series of photos from vacation spots, each labeled with the year and place, as wall paper and currently I have to do this in my pixel editor. It would be a help to be able to do this in OnOne.

Yeah, the lack of any support for Android is what has kept me from pre-ordering. Rating and flagging photos on the go is an integral part of my workflow. Syncing raw files (and the edits) shot from my phone back to the desktop is also an important aspect of LR Mobile, though I understand being an enthusiast of mobile RAW photography is a bit of a niche.

Would love panorama + HDR/exposure fusion stitching a la PTGui, but the absolute number one is the that RAW processor/profiles look good. LR and C1 both provide dissatisfying results for Nikon compared to Capture NX-D or just straight JPEG and if On1 delivers I will switch for sure

My submissions were:
– Add Relightning module

– Brush by color (proper color decontamination/override)

– U-point like masking (declined)
Other submissions I support most:
– Virtual copies + stacking
– Compare mode
– Multi monitor
– Tethered shooting
– Plugins for external services (we use Smugmug for e.g.)
– Translations to other langs – make it catalogue based and community can help to to get the app translated

I agree with this. Also something so mundane as to be able to select a relational photo dimension and, especially, desired DPI would save me a great deal of time and rework corrections on the final product. This is crucial on any standalone module.

Importing apple aperture libraries, as Apple has left us users without a real upgrade path, I know On1 works as a plugin for Aperture but to be able to migrate away and just use On1. But bringing existing cataloging with us and edits would be fantastic.

Aperture import, yes please! I have around 5tb in aperture library´s and I´m still very pissed at apple. Never liked lightroom that much, can´t wait for on1 raw.

This would be such a big help. On last upgrade Apple failed to advise that I would not be able to use Aperture so I was forced to switch to Photos. I have recently discovered that Aperture now works again but I have a year’s photos in Photos. The entire Aperture library was duplicated in the process but is not re-editable in Photos. I am pulling my hair out about what to do now… If I could get both sets of images including originals and edits into OnOne I would ditch both in a heartbeat!

I would like the ability to enter keywords and to be able to retrieve images using those keywords without the overhead and hastle of using Lightroom. Currently I have that ability in a product called Digital Pro which I use as my “front end” light table.

What I would like to see is some kind of smart white balance filter. A tool that would analyze and fix mixed temperature lighting. A very common thing when you shoot indoor with windows. I know you can do this with a brush in Lightroom, but there´s got to be a better way.

Layers in each module and the ability to paint out the filter/effect.
The ability to use Transform tool to change the perspective of a new sky to add realism.

Pulled the trigger and pre-ordered On1 RAW. One of the main reasons is that inside Aperture there’s 1000s of photos lurking, waiting to be sorted and edited. All I wish for from On1 is that they figure out some way to get all DNGs in an easy way out of the Aperture libraries. How I regret that I didn’t store them in folders, outside of the app. Another argument not to go the Lightroom-way.
Looking forward to the new version, and hoping On1 will help out the desperate Aperture librarians.

Just use “Relocate Original …” in the Aperture File menu. You can easily move all your images to an external file system.

One other idea, which got some +3 votes on the Plus forum:
I am constantly confused, when working in Layers, when I press the Close button, it stays in Layers, even if no layer is actually open. My long time starting point of on1 is Browse. I would really welcome a preference setting (or the change of behaviour) with the ability to automatically return to Browse, if Layers Close button is pressed.
It’s just a small detail, but it really disturbes my smooth workflow 🙂

Along with Xtrans processing for Fuji, the ability to apply the Fujifilm film emulations like Classic Chrome or Acros B&W like it is done in Lightroom.
Clarity controls like how it is implemented in Capture One Pro 9. A clarity and structure slider with different modes.

I would like to be able to use an external editor in the Layers module. The idea would be to be able to call some specific external functionality on a single layer and return that layer, with adjustments, back to the Layers module. While OnOne contains a great many adjustment options in its current modules there are always things that function-specific external apps may do better. External editors and plugins would be a great help in some areas and the only way to call them now is through Browse which does not allow the targeting of specific layers.

I have been requesting a text module or text layer for a long time. As in Photoshop. It would be so useful and you guys can make it very creative I’m sure. Many people make collages of people or places and having ability to add a text layer would really be a Photoshop killer. Please consider it .

on1 once stated, that they plan on a Text module. The info came out in terms of their Labs blog, but we’ve never heard about it anymore. We are creating some advertisements for LED screens and Text module would be really useful to us too 🙂

Along with Panorama and HDR it would be helpful if OnOne could add Focus Stacking functionality for macro photos. As it currently is I have to use something like Helicon Focus or the existing Focus Stacking in external editors like Affinity Photo and Photoshop (which I no longer actually use). It seems to me that it logically would fit into the Panorama and HDR functionality that OnOne is planning to add.

I would like to see:
-Tethering- something strong & stable & able to apply Text layers to images for potential Magazine Covers or special articles….like they have in Capture One
-Skin Smoothing- I really like the clean professional look of smooth skin it does on the Face but it doesn’t have the same affect for the rest of a model’s body. It would be great if we could “selectively” apply skin smoothing and adjust each area independently as is needed. And to continue refining the skin smoothing technique for a more flawless look…..I think you guys are very close to creating a game changing industry standard for skin smoothing…..I shoot models for magazines so this would be of great use to me and others in our field!

Reducing or eliminating PSD file requirement will make me stick with On1. Over the past couple of years I have been moving away from On1 Photo due to the huge PSD files sizes that are created with only 1 or 2 adjustments. A 20MB Nikon .nef RAW file would increase to 350MB when only applying Dynamic Contract from Effects. If adjustments are now stored as instructions instead of generating a PSD file I’m all for it!

The ability to use 3rd party plugins. I know that is a tall order but there are some plugins with essential functionality that does not exist in OnOne. For example Dxo sells a keystoning plugin that allows users to control the overall perspective of the image including squaring corners, correcting perspective distortion and even changing the viewpoint of the image. OnOne does not have this functionality but the ability to call this plugin would solve this problem.
Short of that some perspective correction functionality would be helpful. Transform allows changes to the size of an image but not the perspective.

LR is still being used by many people but because of Adobe’s business model, many of us have moved to Capture1 (free for Sony shooters). I would love to see integration with C1 as well as LR.

Looking forward to the release…
My list of wants would include the following (some may already be a feature).
1. Focus stacking and HDR/blending. Currently using enfuse which I like, but not having to go external would be great!
2. A layered type of local adjustments that you can name – check out Capture One Pro for an example.
3. Targeted adjustments, similar to Lightrooms
4. An intelligent AUTO that actually works – I find that Capture One Pro does such a great job as an initial adjustment that includes not only basic exposure but also sharpening.
5. Camera profiles that emulate what’s available in the cameras. LR does a reasonable job of this and can of course be adjusted to taste. Add to that the ability to create custom profiles to share.
6. Import presets based on parameters – see LR’s apply preset based on ISO.
7. Multiple “Edit With” configurations.
I’m sure there’s more, but those would be cool!

Given the ongoing need to use photos with multiple social platforms and blogs, it would be nice to have the ability to add text to a photo. Not metadata, but text on the photo. The goal being to do as much as possible with images from one application that includes file management , processing (including text )and distribution in the appropriate format.

I use X-Rite’s ColorChecker Passport to create color profiles for all of my cameras, and I use the present ON1 tools as plug-ins to Lightroom and Photoshop. Hope that won’t end with ON1 RAW.

There are two things I would like to see.
1) The ability to place text on an image. This is most useful when images are used as slides for teaching and for annotating a slide show.
2) I do a lot of infrared photography and Photoshop is an essential part of my workflow for channel swapping the red and blue channels as part of providing a false colour image. I have yet to figure out how to do this in ON1.
Also, if you are going to provide the ability to import from Lightroom, then you will have to provide the ability to import Keywords as well, as I rely on my keywords to find images from past photo shoots.

So far it all sounds great. Photo 10 was a big advance in stability, 10.5 went slightly backwards, but is acceptable, when balanced against the improvements.
So, I am a little worried that you may be at risk of biting off more than you can chew, by trying to add too many inovations to the October/Autumn release. I will be anxiously awaiting some of the promised improvements that will come in the Winter update, (especially the ability to make virtual copies of raw files), but for Autumn my hope is that what is delivered works well.
I am also looking forward to smaller file sizes, as this should make things work much better on my laptop.

You’ll have to excuse me because I’m just coming into this process, so I don’t know what’s already included in the product, or already suggested, but there are two features that I’m looking / hoping for.
1. Face matching – the ability to pick a face in one image and have the software scan the catalog for other images with the same face (or at least, best guess).
2. A pre-editor (something along the lines of Perfectly Clear, but working in RAW) that performs nondestructive, first cut edit of imported images.

I am an Underwater Photographer, I also teach UW photography to hundreds of photographer per year. One of the most important tools for me is the Clone/Repair tool. I find the tool in Lightroom to be clunky and difficult to use when you have a large number of spots to remove (which is often the case with UW photography). That tool in Aperture was very user friendly. I’d like to know more about ON1’s Clone/Repair tool.

Please give me a shortcut link to my ‘pictures’ folder (at least) in your browser so I don’t have to navigate there all the way from my ‘C’ drive every time. Adding this folder to ‘favorites’ means that ALL my images have to be ‘watched’/imported (yes imported) into your system and it takes FOREVER and your app crashes if it isn’t completely perfect. All I want is to be able to setup simple links to my images in your browser that don’t have to be ‘watched’. I can choose what to ‘watch’ thank you.
Looking forward to the new ON1 RAW .. Seems like quite a leap forward. Nice going!

I know Linux users are still a minority, but growing everyday. And NextGeneration software should include all three major operating systems, imho :). I’m a professional photographer who got sick from Windows and Apple and now since 8 years a very happy Linux user who is only longing for one thing: a really good raw convertor for Linux.

My favourites would be:
– Perspective, lens, sharpness and noise correction on par with DxO Optics pro (which rules any other software – and especially Lightroom – on these in my opinion)
– Double click on settings to return to standard/zero setting (one of the biggest flaws in the actual interface)
– Better support for international users (keyboard shortcuts etc. > for Preview I have to press alt-shift-7 for example)
– Fixing of an endlessly annoying bug with macOS Photos.app integration, which totally distorts color rending when a photo is sent back to Photos.app
– Support of RAW within Photos.app
– Niks control point technology (or something similar, like Polarrs color masking)
– Maximise real screen estate
– More speed all around (my original Retina MacBook Pro often feels sluggish in On1 Photo 10)

Will the new Raw Editor provide a preset for initial adjustments for raw files being edited? That is, is the new Raw Editor smart enough to analyze the raw image being loaded and provide for initial automatic adjustments? And will it allow for a user defined preset to be specified instead of any initial automatic preset?

There are currently 3 major workflow tools for the Mac – Lightroom, CaptureOne and Dxo Optics Pro. All of those allow for the selection of a single specific color and at the ability to adjust the HSL values for that color. I am not referring to the HSL Panel where a user can select one of 6 (or 7 or 8) colors but the ability to point to a specific color in an image and then adjust for that color.
Will the new Raw Editor contain such functionality?

I would love the RAW software to include a depp and full managmente of Luminosity Masks and similar concept of working on 10 digital zones. That would be amazing and unbelievable plus, that woul bit LR and C1 , the two stronger competitors, which are lacking in that field

I would like to reduce a large number of pics to email size without having to crop or confirm for each photo.
I would also like to have the choice to “save as” anytime I make changes to a photo.
I love yor software and hope Photo Raw will be available before November.

Would like the ability to save any number of adjustment brush settings that could readily be selected. For example, when making initial edits/correction in LR currently I may have a set of photos that need similar selective exposure adjustments with the adjustment brush but different parts or the photo need different settings i.e. Hair needs a +.60, face needs a +.40, some part of the body or background needs -.35. It would be great that I could save each of these as an “adjustment brush set” that I could quickly select with one click rather than having to go out of the adjustment brush component, come back in and enter the new setting in the adj brush exposure text box for each area that needs to be corrected. Hope this makes sense. Would be a great addition to local adjustment functionality, I believe!

While it’s great to see this top-ten list of core features, and I’m here because I want good raw support for my Fuji, I think it would be valuable for On1 to have a plugin API of its own so third-party developers can add features that don’t make your top-ten list.
As an example, I regularly use Jeff Friedl’s plugins for Lightroom (http://regex.info/blog/lightroom-goodies).

Hi everybody.
It has been mentioned about Import Presets … but it would be also nice to have Export Presets. Currently in LR I have 6 different export presets with ability to change the file name (either completely or just a part of it); file type selection (TIFF, PSD, or JPEG with Quality selection for compression); resize; sharpen; watermarking and what to do after Export.
All the mentioned options are essential for me. Also the last one – what to do after the export – “Nothing”, “Open Export Folder”, “Open file in Photoshop”, “Open in other application”. In few Export Presets I use option “Open file in Photoshop” where I sharpen and add Watermark via Action (or Droplet).
Regarding Watermarking – in case your Software will have such option, I hope that will be possible to add a graphic Watermark in its original size. LR doesn’t have such ability and that drives me nuts !!!
Regarding Renaming – in LR it is possible to create a Rename preset with many options. Very handy feature. Always rename all photos after Import … the file after rename looks similar to that: “1609_Paris_025.RAW” (YearMonth_CustomText_Index).

I totally agree with the “save as” command being active and available after porting over a file from Lightroom. There are many instances I want to ‘save as’ various versions of a file I’m working on but currently that can only be done if one loads a file directly into On1 and not from Lightroom.

Regarding presets, 2 things:
1) It would be great to manually rearrange the preset list into an order that’s most efficient for me. Since they are currently arranged alphabetically, any number of presets I use frequently are at the bottom of the list – and it’s a long long list. To be able to sort the preset list manually would allow me to put my most used groups of presets at the top of the list.
2) When opening a group of presets, let’s say they are near the middle or bottom of the preset list, and I look them over and decide there’s nothing there I want and then back arrow to the main list, it takes me back to the top of the list. It would be great if when you back out of a particular group of presets it would display the preset list at the same location on the list where you were when you selected it and not go back to the top where you then have to scroll back down to where you were.

About aperture 3, mine crashed and I’m not able to fully open it. No one in help or support groups have been able to get it up and operational again.
