Important Announcement: ON1 Photo RAW

Posted in

I wanted to personally thank you for the continued support as we get closer to the launch of ON1 Photo RAW. The response from the ON1 community has been tremendous since our announcement in April. I assure you, everyone at ON1 has been working hard to deliver the best release in our 11 year history.

Since we first announced ON1 Photo RAW back in April, our goal has been to deliver the world’s fastest, most flexible, and easiest-to-use RAW processor and photo editor on the market. To achieve this, we launched initiatives like The Photo RAW Project, where we asked the community to vote on the features they want and how they want them implemented. We have been overwhelmed with the positive support and feedback. So much so, that we adopted an entirely new development process to enable monthly releases of Photo RAW heading into 2017. We are prioritizing user feedback and putting your ideas into action for all upcoming product releases.

The future of raw photo editing is nearly here, starting with the ON1 Photo RAW Pre-Release on November 23rd which will be available for download to all ON1 Plus Pro members and to those who pre-ordered. We want to give our best customers the first opportunity to touch the product and give us feedback on their experience while we add the final finishing touches. The full release of ON1 Photo RAW will be December 19th, but we aren’t going to stop there! We’ll be adding incredible new features and enhancements with free monthly updates starting in 2017. These updates will be determined by you and the feedback you provide via the Photo RAW Project.

Our hope is that out of the gate, Photo RAW will be a great alternative for customers wanting a new and modern way of editing their photos. We also want to continue to work where we always have, as plug-ins to Adobe® Lightroom® and Photoshop®. Photo RAW won’t include every feature users want out of the gate, but with your help we can get there before you know it. Remember, it’s just the beginning and the outlook is very good.

Sincerely,

Craig Keudell, President
ON1, Inc.

This is really looking exciting and seems to have just what I imagined you might create. Good job! I do have one question, that may become apparent when I have the app on my computer. I know it is nondestructive in that you can undo and go back to the original RAW file. My question then is what if you like the adjustment you made and want to save the new picture. How do you then return to the original RAW file to create another variation.

I think that Virtual copies will come later (as far as I understand some past comments). Initial release will not allow imo more, than to use either Layers (not sure how non destructive works there), or you will have to copy your photo physically. This is imo a very important feature, so I hope it comes soon enough after the initial release …

Do you think the pre release version is stable enough to work with them for a Christmas project? Thanx looking forward

Thanks @CraigKeudell, I’ve been using On1 Products for quite a few happy years. I’m looking forward to RAW and it’s continuing evolution in 2017. I hope that monthly updates are totally focused on increasing functionality without revamping the User Interface!

Yea, I see what you did there. The release date has been moved back again with the prior release date becoming a “pre-release” date. That’s a big jump from the beta we originally expected in Summer, but you know what? I’m not complaining in the least. All we’ve ever wanted was open communication. Perfection takes time. Your loyal customers understand that. We just need great communication like this blog post to keep us in the loop. I can’t wait you get my hands on the new product, but I’ll be patient a while longer, knowing it will be another good one when we get our hands on it. Thanks for all you do. Looking forward to November 23rd and December 19th!

The ‘photo raw project’ sounds like a really good idea.

But, if you want a lot of people to use it.

Then I think that the ON1 Plus website needs to provide some clearer sign posts and links. So that people can easily find the ‘project’ pages.

    Best wishes David Price

I am looking forward to the release of Photo Raw. My main work is sports photography and I am hoping it will improve my post processing workflow and times. I currently use photomechanic then process in photoshop and more recently lightroom and use on1 for some added effects and mainly use the eraser to remove unwanted objects in my pictures all being restricted with deadline time restraints. I use on1 much more reprocessing favorite pictures and personal photo work. Can you touch on how could the new Photo Raw improve the speed, processing, import/export possibly bypassing my using photoshop or lr during a sporting event. Thank you.

I sure hope it works with the 5D Mark IV, ACR has not said much…

I’m so excited about the release of Photo RAW. My wife and I enjoy photography, but we are not remotely professionals. For me, the biggest thing that made me pre order is the ability to sync changes across computers easily. We each have a laptop and a server to sync and backup our work. To me this will make it so easy for us to work, I can make changes on my laptop and say tag it with blue to show it’s one of my favorites and she can edit and tag with another colour for her favorites. If my hard drive in my laptop dies, I buy a new one, copy the files back from my server, install Photo RAW and I’m back in business. Love it.
The rest looks awesome, the only problem is I leave on a cruise on the 22nd, so I’ll have to wait till Dec 2nd to give the pre release a whirl (I’ll have plenty of photos to throw at it though)

Hi Craig and thanx for the post.

I want to leave a comment here, to let You know how I (and there might be others too) experience this post/release, and how, what You communicate, is experienced from this end.
(I am Danish, so i am sorry for any misunderstanding or wrong spelling)

I am a Lightroom user out of need- for now. Tried Photoninja, DxO, Corel Aftershot, Aperture, own Capture One Pro, am a Lightroom/Photoshop Subscriber and ON1 Photo Suite owner – and i payed for the PhotoRAW upgrade under the impression that i would get a fully functional copy (read bug free, stable and usable ) november 23 this year.

I havent embraced ON1 PS quite yet, as it is a tad slow (running on a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 8gb RAM/SSD i5) and for now it cant beat Lightrooms functionality combined with Photoshop and Nik Software.

Photo RAW “promises” to surpass Lightroom in all that matters to me as a photographer – organising files, RAW conversion and Post editing stuff that brings sharpness and effects to the mix. Thats why i invested in PhotoRAW – AND because i simply hate monthly fees.

I should be able to buy a certain version (say V1) and for that price i would expect/demand free necessary compatability updates (cameras) and certainly bug fixes until the software was complete, stable and fully functional in all aspects of what was promised for that version.

When version 2 (which should hold some major upgrades compared to 1) hit the street, i would consider paying an upgrade fee if i needed or wanted the upgrade at all.

From what you have written, i gather we/i will not get a finished product november 23, but some beta version not suited for a production environment?!?

I also get the distinct feeling, that we are on a slippery slope towards subscription if we are to get a finished, well rounded and fully functional product at some indestinct time in the future.

I have become a bit disillusioned and uncertain if i jumped on the right bandwagon here? I need reliable and fully functional software so i could end my relationship with adobe, whos RAW converter is one of lesser quality than most of the competion.

I also need some of the tools that Nik Software could offer – now that Google in effect have stopped support for it. Especially detail enhancers, sharpening, Color cast removal and temperature modifyers.

With Photo RAW, that was what you told us, was your intentions – but now, You pospone and seem to talk Your way out of the promises You’ve made – is that really what You are doing?!?

I sincerely hope i am dead wrong here…

    regards

Well said, Gunni. My position is very similar to yours, but I’m trying to be optimistic that all our patience will pay off in the end. In addition to being a photographer, I am a software developer, so I know things happen. You don’t want to make promises you can’t keep, and you don’t want to release a product prematurely for fear of having your reputation slaughtered. Again, I’m optimistic that they’ll deliver as promised when all is said and done, but they could do a better job of assuring us, too. Communication hasn’t been their strong suit, but I’m taking this blog post as a sign that they are trying to correct that as well.

well said. I am also optimistic, yet beginning to be restless by now. I have been promoting this alternative to photo friends – all in need of a Lightroom alternative. I might have premature but i hope not :)
