How to Fix Overexposed Photos in ON1 Photo RAW (Any Scene, Not Just Travel)

Overexposure happens when a camera sensor receives more light than it can record. The brightest parts of the image, a sky, a white shirt, a window, a flash-lit face, get pushed past pure white and lose all detail. That’s called “clipping.” Once a pixel is fully clipped, there’s no color or texture information left in it, and you can’t edit back detail that was never captured.
How much headroom you have to recover depends on file format. A RAW file stores far more tonal information above what your camera’s preview shows as “white” than a JPEG does, because in-camera JPEG compression throws away that extra data. A shot that looks blown out on the camera’s LCD can often be pulled back in ON1 Photo RAW, as long as you’re editing the original RAW file rather than an already-processed JPEG.
Step-by-step: fixing an overexposed photo in ON1 Photo RAW
1. Start in the Develop persona, on the Tone panel.

When a photo is too far gone to fix
Not every overexposed shot is recoverable. If a bright area shows as pure, flat white with the clipping warning on, and no texture reappears no matter how far you pull down Highlights and Whites, the sensor never recorded that detail. It’s gone in the RAW data, not hidden by a slider setting. You’ll see this most often with direct sun in the frame, specular reflections off water or glass, and flash that overpowers its subject. In those cases, embrace the blown area: crop it out, convert to black-and-white to make the loss less distracting, or treat it as a stylistic high-key look.
