Oranienstrasze Berlin, 1982
During a research conference in Berlin in the autumn of 1982, I took a walk with my German colleagues during the lunch break in Kreuzberg, Berlin. We were researching suitable topics for a seminar on Visuelle Kommunikation.
We approached some squatted buildings on Oranienstrasze, where a massive clash between the police and squatters was unfolding. At that same moment, three residents from the building across the street stepped outside. Completely stunned, they watched as furniture was being thrown out of the windows toward the police. I’ve never forgotten those three. Visuelle Kommunikation was right there for the taking.
