In Another World
This is a composite photo. The “planet” in the foreground is a backside view of an antique car headlamp that I found in a junkyard. I was initially drawn to the patterns of the rust and peeling paint. The original background was very busy, so I first tried just blurring and darkening the background. Then inspiration hit and I added a layer using a photo of the night sky that I took several years ago when Comet Neowise was visible. This substitution transformed the image into one that appealed to me as a geologist – an unknown planet with visible continents, floating in a different universe.
Post processing notes:
All of the editing was done in ON1 Photo Raw. For the headlamp layer, I darkened the base and used Dynamic Contrast to enhance the rust. A little bit of Glow brought out the contrast. For the night sky, I used Noise Reduction and also toned down the saturation. Super Select made it easy to layer the two images into the final composite.Exif information:
