Black and White in Black and White
This zebra posed perfectly for me on a trip to the Albuquerque Zoo. In color, however, the image was nothing special. Once I converted it to black and white, though, the essence of the zebra seemed to jump out of the photo. I do not usually photograph animals, but the quiet, contemplative look of the zebra just spoke to me.
Post processing notes:
Processing was done in ON1 Photo Raw 2026. In order to remove a distracting background, I applied a Local Adjustment background mask, and reduced the exposure until I had the black background that I wanted. I used the Refine Brush to edit the mask so as to preserve the details of the hairs in the zebra's mane and around the ear. I added 15% Glow to the zebra to bring out a little extra contrast.Exif information:
