Every year, we travel to Tennessee to visit our son’s family. During a previous visit, I was captivated by the vibrant bird activity weaving through the tall trees in their backyard, which sparked a desire to return prepared. In 2026, I arrived equipped with my camera kit and a 200mm lens, determined to dive into the challenging world of avian photography. Having been away from the craft for some time and completely new to this genre, I quickly realized that bird photography requires far more than just equipment—it demands meticulous preparation, behavioral study, and above all, absolute patience. This image represents not just a bird in its natural habitat, but a personal milestone in rediscovering my passion, embracing a new artistic challenge, and finding profound joy in learning something entirely new.
Post processing notes:
As a long-time Lightroom user, I was initially hesitant to switch platforms due to the steep learning curve typically associated with new software. However, wanting to explore fresh creative avenues, I downloaded the trial version of ON1 Photo RAW just as this photography trip began. After spending the first few days studying tutorials and understanding the layer-based workflow, I was amazed by how quickly the interface became intuitive. Within a week, I was editing with total confidence. For this specific image, my goal was to emphasize the intricate texture of the plumage and separate the subject from the dense backyard canopy. In the Develop module, I carefully balanced the highlights and shadows to preserve the natural lighting. I then utilized Dynamic Contrast to selectively enhance the fine micro-textures of the feathers without introducing digital noise. Once satisfied with the tonal balance, I saved these adjustments as a custom User Preset to maintain a consistent aesthetic across my series. Finally, I applied a subtle, feathered Vignette to naturally draw the viewer's eye away from the background distractions and directly onto the subject. The transition to ON1 allowed me to achieve a level of depth and clarity that perfectly brought this moment to life.Exif information:
