I took this photograph during a nighttime ferry crossing. An unusual atmosphere reigned on the deck: few people were present, and the artificial lighting cast small cones of light, leaving everything else immersed in darkness. In that silence, I noticed a girl sitting alone, completely absorbed in her phone, almost unaware of the space around her.
What struck me was the stark contrast between light and shadow, but above all the contrast between physical presence and isolation. Despite being in a place of passage, shared with other people, she seemed enclosed in a dimension all her own. The light isolated her from the context, transforming her into the protagonist of a simple, almost theatrical scene.
I chose black and white because it eliminates every superfluous element and focuses attention on the composition, geometry, textures, and the dialogue between light and darkness. I wanted to capture a moment of suspension, one of those moments when time seems to slow down and everyday life takes on a deeper meaning. It was precisely that atmosphere, made of silence, anticipation, and introspection, that inspired me to photograph.
Post processing notes:
All post-production was done with ON1 Photo RAW MAX 2025. Small adjustments were made to the contrast, closing the whites and opening the midtones. Brilliance AI achieved a good effect, albeit with a small amount applied. In the Effects section, I used the Black and White filter to correct some color casts. Applying a Strong vignette further isolated the subject, whereas with Super Select AI the contrast was removed to better highlight its details.
