Congregation of Blackbirds
This photo was taken in my backyard in Bath, Maine on March 27, 2025 at 1:25 pm. Each spring, large flocks of common grackles, brown-headed cowbirds, and red-winged blackbirds pass through during migration. I set up my camera in an upstairs bedroom window that overlooks the backyard. After getting shots of single perched birds, I focused on getting birds in flight. I like this particular shot because it shows the movement as most of the birds took off while the two birds in the center of the frame remained perched (and thankfully in focus). This was shot with a Fujifilm XT-5 with a 100 – 400 mm zoom.
Post processing notes:
I used ON1 Photo RAW 2025 and did some minor tweaking of tone and color on the development tab, added a local adjustment using the edges mask to slightly raise the exposure of the perched birds, added dynamic contrast to the two perched birds and the branch they are perched on, and added a vingette.Exif information:
