Two Hutterite Women at the Farmer’s Market
I love the opportunity to photograph the goings-on at the weekly Farmer’s Market in Billings. Several Hutterite communities come to town to sell the vegetables they raise. They make up part of the very interesting mixture of folks buying and selling. I came upon these young women and asked them if I could take their picture. They smiled and agreed and I was pleased by the photo and of the individuality of the women that shone through their similarity of dress . After taking the picture, I asked them what the tattoos on their faces represented. They laughed and said they put them on for fun and washed them off after market was over. It was only later that my eyes turned to the hands of the woman on the left, hands seemingly in prayer.

Post processing notes:
I did very little post-processing on this photograph, in ON1 of course, largely to bring into some balance the various gradations of white, gray, and black without blowing out or overly darkening black spaces. There are ways I could have removed the clutter of cars, doors, etc., in the background. But I consciously made the decision to keep those objects in, if a lttle lightened, so that the women might not be emphasized without at least a taste of context.Exif information:
