First of all, big thanks to EVERYONE who downloaded the Photo RAW Pre-release! We’ve been reading each of your comments and have been sending new issues straight to our dev team so they are aware and can fix them. We also wanted to let you know that we’ll be releasing an updated Pre-Release by the end of this week or early next week. This update will address issues coming in.
We also understand people are frustrated they received the Pre-Release and not the final December 19th release. We hear you! We also want to make the December 19th release, ON1 Photo RAW 2017, our best release ever. We only ask for your patience as we wrap up everything and fix each outstanding issue. We are committed to fixing these issues.
Thank you again from everyone at ON1. Our users have shown tremendous support and provided valuable feedback from the Photo RAW Pre-release. We still want to encourage people experiencing issues to submit them to our support team.

Please make the sliders and side buttons bigger on 5K display.
Please integrate a function what recognize the type of the display resolution… or setup manualy.

I actually think that it should be possible to change the size of a brush as in Aperture (I.e. By using the roller button the mouse) or two fingers on a track pad.
I agree the sliders should als be there and need to be bigger.
It should also be possible to type in the size of brush.

To be able to change the brush size using the roller button on the mouse.
Open On1 Raw click on edit go down to preferences. In general you will see scrolling control. open the drop down menu from there.click brush control.Your mouse roller will now adjust the size of your brush. I prefer this to using the bracket keys.

Hi Folks, downloaded the pre release and was a little disappointed. Too much things don’t work, the browse module is slow as a snail, the demosaicing of the raw-files is far from perfect compared to capture one. I hope the next pre-release will be better.
In general I think the potential of On1 raw is great, but there is a lot of work to do in adding functions like printing, soft proofing. But I trust the dev team and I think On1raw will be the only Raw converter I’ll work with.

We are definitely listening. Our dev team is working hard and we wont stop with the December 19th release. Already, lots of free updates with new features planned for early 2017.

Not sure the emphasis should be “lots of free updates with new features planned” This beta is not good and we paid in advance for a raw converter that would equal or rival Lightroom .. that was the implication at least. Where is it?

Glad you mentioned that the files load slowly. It is 1 hr and 3 folders are still not loaded in Browse. I do have large files but in on1 10…. no problem

Hmmm… Those who were frustrated must not have read the volumes of material which preceded and accompanied the pre-release. Can’t wait until the “final product” is out there but in the mean time, the pre-release has been pretty awesome; the speed and flexibility have been nothing short of amazing.

I’m still drinking the Kool-Aid, hoping my dreams for On1 Photo Raw eventually come true. I’ve got to be honest, the wait was stressful, but not half as stress as testing the “pre-release beta” and seeing this level of defects 30 days before the production release. I’m keeping the faith, looking forward to this week’s update. Make us proud!

Yes, allegedly there’s much in the works. However, I am not overly impressed with the pre-release either. The file management system falls short in my opinion. It’s the same configuration as Lightroom and DXO; you have to create specific folders and search them out. In my opinion, Apple made a mistake dropping Aperture support and releasing Photos which is, in essence, useless. However, the concept of a single library file is brilliant. Would like to see that in RAW. In Aperture, events could exported as separate libraries and then imported into Aperture. Well, we shall see, but this release is nothing earth shattering.

Something has changed with the masking brush. When I use it it doesn’t fill in evenly. Instead it leaves a series of dots in the mask and I have to go over and over the area to get it filled in. Very different from On1.

Is your perfect brush turned on, or off?
If it is On, then you will get the effect that you are describing. As it will only mask the same colours as the centre of the brush was covering and will leave the other colours unmasked.
If it is Off, then everything under the brush, should get evenly masked.

I really think this will be the go to software for pros but one issue that’s really affecting RAW is when I bring photos in they automatically crop. It happens when using a canon 60D but it doesn’t affect 10.5 or other software that I am using. I’m going to shoot with my 5D mark ii and Sony A7 to see if it does the same with them.

Thanks for reporting this, I use a 60D as well. Previewing issues with some Canon RAW files is a known issue, and will be fixed before the final release.

ON1 photo RAW (pre-release) is so buggy and unreliable on my PC (Windows 10) that I cannot use it for critical assignments. The browser is slow and sometimes crashes when I view and cull my 50,000 photos. Often, when I delete a photo in the browser, it goes back at the top instead of my current location, which makes it difficult to find where I was when I deleted the photo. Also, I cannot invoke photo RAW inside Photoshop CS6. The only way I can make it work is when I uninstalled my previous version of ON1 photo 10 (seems to be a software conflict). Releasing without the cropping tool and the histogram is a major problem for me. Also, the Portrait 2017 does not appear in the menu, so I cannot use it to retouch my portraits. May I suggest that ON1 concentrate on making the basic stuff work flawlessly before introducing new features. I believe that this software could be very useful if it would work properly as advertised.

Keeping fingers crossed that a much better version will be seen by 12/19. I have been preparing for standalone use of ON1 RAW starting in 2017… setting up files, culling LR versions, developing workflow for getting images into folders,etc. From my own work and from reviews around the internet (I know the interweb is not always a reliable source) I have my concerns about the x-trans RAW conversions. Also, I have had major problems going from develop back to browser … images get dark and have artifacts. When I go back to ON1 10.5 …. it is such a good program… I know all of this will eventually get resolved.

Is the Portrait module not included in the prerelease? The clone stamp tool should also be included on side panel with eraser and bandaid.

Portrait isn’t going to be a module by itself in Photo RAW. We are going to integrate the features into Effects as part of a free update next year. You can see we have many good things in store as free updates next year! https://www.on1.com/products/photo-raw/coming-soon/

since my version 10 browser has not worked for several months now. When it did work the time to load photos was very long and caused system crashes.
I can hardly believe that this is what the predecessor could have been like. It is amazing how quickly you can move around on different drives. Absolutely incredible update and I have only been using the plug-ins. I can now feel good about trying different things out since it will not take 3 min to render the results. Wow! I am close to use On1 10.5 and Photoshop only.

A note for your debuggers:
Check this scenario:
1. Attach an external hard disk with thousands of RAW files to your MacBookPro with macOS Sierra.
2. Open a folder with at least 1000 RAW file (I use Nikon NEF) in Browse.
3. Check the file in ‘feet the window’ and start to type X to select them to be deleted later.
5. See what happens after you select around 100 files.
This is what happened to me:
I got the message that there is no room in my hard disk to continue!! Before starting this procedure I had 37G empty room in my hard disk and when I checked it at this point I had just 1.7Mb. I had to quite On1 Photo RAW. Restart my laptop to proceed. I check this a couple of times and I had the same problem.

im on a surface pro 4 and i also see my harddrive space disappear fast. 63gb went as i asked it to index an external harddrive. several reboot later – i am down to 47gb of space on my 250gb drive – and so far i am not getting the space back after reboot

Oh dear oh dear – cancelled my Adobe subscription because i thought we were about to receive the lightroom beater of all time. I know its beta for now (even if you gave another impression until last minute) and for now i think its alpha-ware (at best) Sorry guys but thats what it feels like to me.
Interface seems half baked- basic but essential stuff coming later, and so far, the RAW conversion doesnt blow me away (compared to lightroom, photoninja or Capture One)
Dont get me wrong- i am still onboard, and hoping for ON1 RAW to get well soon, but we need something of a leap in quality to regain/reaffirm my/our trust in this project.
So far, it doesnt present itself well on high resolution screens, the software crashes often, devices doesnt show up during import, disc runs full fast, important features arent there, and the RAW rendering doesnt look like anything groundbreaking so far.
I, for one, still believe you, but i need a Lightroom replacement fast, and that was basically what you promised 🙂 Please dont let us down.

Some of us have been using desktops/laptops for over thirty years and are accustomed software growing up under us as we move forward.
Personally I think the ON1’s programmers &/or thechies have done an unreal job. We should be adult enough to live with this first release happily until December 17th, remember “Rome was not built in a day!”
I’m with you wholeheartedly, mouse, and keyboard ON1! Thanks for PhotoRAW, it is magic and will, I am sure, become even more magical soon…

I love how I can develop my photos with On1 RAW to much better looking ones! That’s all great. Only speed is a real problem. I hope this will improve soon.
And the biggest problem: You advertised speed as one of the biggest advantages … and did not deliver yet.

Can anyone at ON1 report on the percentage or ratio of customers using Windows machines as opposed to Macs? For instance, is it 30% Windows and 70% Macs, closer to 50/50 or even the other way around?
I’ve been using ON1 products for several years and love them. If I need to buy a Mac to squeeze out every last bit of performance I just might do that.

I’m running it on two machines; my MBP 2015 i5 with 16gb ram and an ssd running El Capitan and it is quick and stable. My home rig is an earlier gen i7 (4 yrs old) running windoze 10, 16gb ram, 1gb video card, large internal 7200 rpm hd’s, and it’s not quite as quick but appears stable. It would be difficult to gauge performance across platforms unless one could dual boot. Perhaps on1 has some info somewhere on its’ user base and or error reports. Until they release a fully operational product, I’m with holding judgment.

Hi Adam- I’m running Win10, i7 4770k 3.2Ghz, with 256GB SSD for programs and 3TB 7200 HDD for storage, 32GB RAM, GTX660 Ti 2GB VRAM sporting OpenGL 4.3. I’m the guy who waits for the Dec 19 release so I can do a ‘clean’ install of the production version. I’ll be sure and let folks know how it goes. My hope is Win boxes make up at least half of the user base so an equal amount of time is dedicated to development in that regard. I suspect the variance in Windows machine’s hardware will involve a little more effort to iron out though. I love On1 products an am willing to put up with the delays (pretty common in software development) but wouldn’t it be great if the production version ran great out of the box?

Perhaps, when we compare Photo Raw to Lightroom, it is worth remembering that Lightroom has been under development for a little over a decade, (or is it a decade and a half by now?) Where as Photo Raw is still a ‘Beta’, it has not even been launched!
(Software companies give ‘Betas’ out to ‘loyal users’, (that’s us folks), expressly so that large numbers of people can use the Beta and help them to find all of the bugs). So, with the best will in The World, as a Beta it is unlikely to be perfect. It will be full of bugs. And, launching simultaneously into a range of conflicting operating systems is pretty ambitious. Think Mac OS, Windows 7, Windows 10, all of which contain fundamental differences, which could cause the software to do some strange things. (Mac OS is far more standardised and predictable than Windows, which could explain why Hudson is reporting less crashes than Windows users?))
From my personal point of view, there are some serious non working features, but there is also a development plan that says that many of these ‘essential features’ will arrive in the next twelve months.
I am still using Lightroom and Photo 10 for my special photos, because until the camera corrections for Micro 4/3rds arrives, Photo Raw can’t properly process/correct my photos. But, I have been having a lot of fun playing with Photo Raw, on a copy set of raw files.
Yes I am frustrated that the ‘essential features’ do not yet work. But, I am also looking forward to using, what could soon be one of the best photo processors on the market.
In the meantime, we just have to try to find and to report as many bugs as we can.

Downloaded and Installed RAW yesterday morning. Ony 18 days until full release?????
Windows 10, 64Gig-2400 RAM, 3.4 Ghz 8-Core processor, C drive is an Internal 1Tb SSD, Scratch Drive is an Internal 1 Tb SSD, all my photos on Drobo S and Drobo 5d – USB 3.0.
Started the software yesterday at about 1:00pm and allowed Browse to scan and index 3 folders: Pictures on the C: SSD, 1 folder with 20,000+ photos on the Drobo S, and one folder with 50,000+ photos on the Drobo 5d.
Left it running when I left to teach and then as it was still indexing, left it overnight. Now it is the next morning and it is still indexing… One of the drives was finished (Drobo 5d) so I wanted to look at a few photos. I guess it is pitifully slow because the other two locations are still indexing. If I look at any image in any folder on the drive that is finished indexing, it starts indexing that drive again an tells me it is 98.5% complete. I didn’t add or change anything. All I did was change the current folder displayed in Browse. OMG. This won’t do. I know it is a Beta but only 18 days left until full release. This is much slower than Lightroom…
It is so slow it is not usable.
It will not display RAW images from my Nikon D5.
I am hopeful that the future of this product will be all that was promised. I am worried as I seem to keep hearing about all the new features promised for upcoming releases. This is where we are now with Adobe and Lightroom – more, more, more new features and no attention paid to the current bugs and problems we are all facing. It is this dissatisfaction with Adobe that has forced us all to pin our hopes on On1 RAW. Please do not let us down!
Finally, I know this is a Beta version but we are very close and the speed is a crucial factor.

I agree with you. I am having the same problems that you have described. The browser is too slow and it is using too much CPU resources. Lots of missing functions and not reliable. I hope in the next release it will be much much better. Obviously this product is far from being completed and it is not even good enough for a BETA version.

I would like to say that the basic functions should work perfectly before introducing new features. I am concerned that ON1 will introduce too many new features on top of a software architecture that is not robust and reliable. In the long run it is better for ON1 to offer a robust structure with less features than too many features that crashes all the time. I believe in that product and I am willing to wait to get quality. I hope ON1 succeed because I want to get away from Adobe products (Lightroom and Photoshop).

I think a user manual should have been available with the pre-release of Photo RAW I look at the videos but it’s also handy to have a reference to the tools in print, having said that I must congratulate ON1 for producing a powerful piece of software. Ian B.

I’d like to see the L/R ‘solo mode’ feature. With this feature, only one processing activity window is open at the time. When you select a different processing function, the window you were previously using automatically closes. Makes for a much less cluttered workspace.

After developing/adjusting an image, eg dynamic contrast and then returning it to browse, when viewed – as a single image – the image showing on screen in the browse section does not show the adjustments made and in fact shows a lower-res pastel version with no adjustments made – this is only happening since the update released 5 December

I have an issue with dng-files. Usually I convert most of my original RAW-Files into dng-files. They are shown in browse as icons, but when I click on one and want to get over to develop or to effects etc. I get a message “An Error(1005) occured opening the requested photo.
Secondly I found with low-light files, light sources, such as lamps get a halo around them, which is not there in the original RAW-file, and also not in Lightroom.
Hope these are glitches that will disappear in the final release.

For the sake of comparison I put ON1 Raw and LR side by side on my big monitor. The images in On1 appear to be 0.5 to 0.75 stops darker and / or more saturated. My hope is that regardless of this I can the image to my target via process, just perhaps with slightly different routes as far as specific develop changes. But I want to point out this difference in case there is something significant which needs to be addressed in the code.
