Photo RAW Pre-Release 2 Posted!

Photo RAW Pre-Release 2 Posted!

The update for the Photo RAW Pre-Release has been posted (update 2)! You will receive an email with the updated installers (if you haven’t already). Again, your feedback has been tremendous in helping us drive to the final release December 19th.

The update addresses the issues outlined below. Please also check out the release notes for a list of what’s been addressed, what’s still to come, and our installation instructions.

  • Significant stability increases (which will also increase even more leading up to December 19th)
  • Fixed memory leaks which lead to slow performance and instability for some users
  • Fixed several issues in Browse and changed the way Indexed Folders work
  • This will make indexing faster and use less system resources. Our goal is to continue making Indexed Folders work in the background so there is little to no impact on your normal Browse usage. Keep in mind all indexing is paused when you are working in any app other than Browse (Develop, Effects, Layers, Resize)
  • Fixed issue with Wacom pens not registering click events making Zoom and Masking Bug tools difficult
  • Fixed issue where exported photos didn’t match the preview
  • Fixed issue where Browse fit view didn’t match Develop/Effects
  • Photos from the Canon 7D, 60D, 80D now show the full image dimensions
  • Improved DNG processing, fixed some color issues with DNG
  • Fixed an issue the Nikon D810 photos that caused a crash
  • You can now browse Extras in the file browser inside of Layers (again)
  • Improved support for many Panasonic cameras

This update will solve many issues. A huge shout out to the ON1 Community for helping us squash those bugs!

What version number should we look for to verify that we are, in fact, running Pre-Release 2?

Should be: 11.0.0.3361. Let me know if you have any other questions

Will it be possible to try the final release on december 19th before buying it? Like a 30 days trial or something… Thanks.

Since downloading the new release ison my pic , it is running painfully slower with the filmstrip acting funny, previews opening slower, and odd odd sizes. That’s only the beginning. I think it’s time to do an uninstall and complete reinstall and I’ll post an update.

      Adam RubinsteinDecember 5, 2016

After doing an uninstall/re-install the program appears to be back to its old self. While I haven’t run it through the paces completely, the wonky behavior is gone and the previews are back to rocket fast. If you are installing on a PC, my recommendation is to first uninstall and then install the updated version.

Comment field is not visible in chrome right now (login works both direct and through facebook – but going to blog removes login? works in Microsoft edge though)
Strange vertical stripe shows when switching to develop- disappears after a while.
Crop and histogram left out in this release, renders it basically useless for me 🙁
seems a bit more stable and fluid this time around.

Downloaded and installed with ease. However, the same problems immediately recurred. When opening as a standalone, I can see and maneuver to my photos in Browse. Then when trying to move from Browse to Develop in any of the three view modes, the software immediately crashes and closes. On re-open I get the crash reporting dialog box.
Will try to use as a plug-in from LR CC later today to see if that method works. On the rare photos where it works I am particularly impressed with the White Balance I can get on the Nikon NEF Raw files from my IR converted D600. Unfortunately, if the crashes continue, then there is no net benefit to me from the new software as compared to the also clunky and error-ridden Nikon NX-D software.

Congratulations! You have really done it! I find it hard to believe. Not any more crashes, switching from the one in other modes runs stably. Egad, if yet eventually the crop tool would be! No update with crop tool possible before December 19th? This is my dearest wish…
    Best regards

And it is as slow in generating photos as Lightroom…

  10. Joe Sandrin

    Joe SandrinDecember 6, 2016

It’s me again. This afternoon I tried to open a file from LR CC. The photo opened smoothly into the Layers tab and I was then able to move to the develop tab to handle white balance and other minor adjustments. Then went back to LR CC for further processing elsewhere. Awkward moving around, but that means I need to learn the software better.
OK for now if this is how I want to work. This can work for a photo but not if I want to handle a bunch of IR shots for WB..

Ooops, a stone fallen from my heart. Did just some quick tests with release 2, everything much more better as the first release which costs nerves and time, crashed several times and did not react any more. I lost my joy, but now it seems to work. Had to go back to Bridge and RAW module.
CPU load now up to 140% but did not crash. Develop, export, layer, resize modules are working well. Looking forward to release of Dec. 19.
    regards Fritz

  12. Grant Botes

    Grant BotesDecember 6, 2016

The pre-release update is still freakishly slow on my system, and memory use slowly climbs until I have no RAM left, and that is just in Browse. Eventually system locks up from lack of resources. I’m afraid this update remains unusable for me. The excitement I felt about this product is beginning to turn to disappointment. You can do amazing things with it, but only when it works, and that is not too often. I am uninstalling it now and will give it another look after 19 December, but so far it’s not looking good.

I’m not seeing any improvements either.
After 10 minutes last night, it was already using 3.5GB RAM.
I don’t find it any faster either. It’s either as slow or slower than Lightroom. The only place where it might be faster is in the browser.
I didn’t see many crashes before so I can’t say how much better it is at not crashing.
Also, Fuji raw files are weird. Extremely flat and many are way underexposed or way overexposed. I opened the same exact files in Lightroom and FastRawViewer and they look good without any adjustments. With On1, I have to make adjustments just to get it to look like Lr or FastRawViewer by default.
I don’t see anything related to Fuji raw rendering in the future release notes so I am not sure I’ll be able to use this software.

    3. Adam Rubinstein

      Adam RubinsteinDecember 6, 2016

Grant did you install the new release on top of the existing one or did you perform an uninstall first? When I installed the update on top of the first version (as was recommended) I experienced similar problems. Doing a wipe and clean install of release two resolved the issues. I don’t know if that will work for you but that was the solution on a PC running Windoze 10.

Second release is far better – my computer has crashed only once, and I think it was my fault.
    One suggestion for software engineers:
Following the way of SilkyPix raw developer, program creates new folder “on1_metadata” inside the folder with RAW, and every edited RAW file has his mirrored bonded file inside this folder. For me this structure looks more compact and concise in compare with current on1RAW

    Christopher CurtisDecember 6, 2016

I’m much happier with this release. I’m sometimes seeing slight delays going from browse to develop to fx (sometimes it’s lightning fast) but it is always usable. Brushing is much, much better and more accurate and I am delighted with the overall quality I can get (I could even get a reasonable colour rendering for images made in a sports hall with mercury vapour lighting: something I just could not achieve in lightroom, photoshop and all sorts of other programs). No crashes (yet) but the first version was reasonably stable for me (iMac with 32GB). I set the preferences to only use 75% of resources and wonder if that made a difference.

Data added to the IPTC Description field in Photo RAW is lost when exported to a JPG.
Otherwise, this second version of the pre-release appears to be behaving very well. Just dumped a card of 500+ raw images to a folder and the Photo RAW browser flew through the embedded thumbnails. No lag whatsoever!
Hope we get the Crop and Histogram before Dec. 19.

Much happier with latest version and am really looking forward to Dec. 19th. Be nice to eliminate the stutter when going from Browse to Develop and for Presets to load a bit quicker (there always seems to be a couple that are shy). The filmstrip seems to be a bit delicate and I’m wondering whether it is because I’ve been switching images whilst in a Mode other than Browse. Indeed, I’m often not seeing the correct button (e.g. Apply when in Crop) to end the action and am unsure whether ‘Done’ means go back to browser or go back to develop. A little more thought could be given to making the process more idiot proof, or perhaps it doesn’t matter which key you press when.
On what I’ve seen so far, if most of the bugs can be ironed out, particularly memory leakage, then this software is a true winner.
BTW, until the histogram arrives (it is available in Resize) you can see clipping with Alt+J (Windows)

    Pre-release 1 on Windows 10:
The drag-and-drop function from the browser is not working properly, apparently related to existence of the ON1 sidecar file containing develop/effects instructions.
    1. If the sidecar is present, it is impossible to drag multiple raw files (ORF) to another folder. They must be dragged one at a time.
    2. In some drag and drop operations of multiple files, this message is generated: “File Operations Error. The system cannot find the file specified.”
    3. Browsing a folder with hundreds of thumbnails: Scroll down a hundred or so, select and drag to another folder. The position of the thumbnails being browsed is not sticky after this operation. The folder defaults back to the top of the list, thus requiring a slow scroll operations to find files below those just dragged to another location.

Its looking better and better the only thing I have found is when exporting a raw file and bringing it in as a jpeg. It take around 30 seconds. Is that the basic time ?

  23. Jean-Francois Perreault

    Jean-Francois PerreaultDecember 7, 2016

Wondering if this is a user error or else.
I’ve developed an image, went into the Effects module and added two filters.
Then I hit the Done button.
It’s been rendering for 20 minutes and still not over.
Is that normal or did I do something wrong?

  26. David Price

    David PriceDecember 8, 2016

    Hi,
Apologies, due to work commitments, (family has to eat), I had not had a chance to download and intall until today.
How important is uninstalling Raw 1 before installing Raw 2?
Might be that the following issues are due to no uninstalling before I installed the new version? Hope so any way.
I can develop my Micro 4/3rds images, and they now have straight lines, so thanks.
However, I am looking forward to the videos on how to use the noise reduction and sharpening tools, because the image looks both noisy and soft. Which maybe shows that I don’t know how to use it properly yet.
Develop was impressive, especially the colour picker, which corrected a gloomy evening quite well.
Unfortunately what would be a simple task in Photo 10, i.e. masking a sky became a major problem in effects. My CPU was running at close to 95% with memory at 4 GB (I have 8 GB or RAM). Eventually things ground to a bit of halt, and the masking tool was no longer obeying the mouse in puts. Maybe it is my fault for failing to uninstall first ?
One other thought though, in Photo 10 you can easily save the developing picture, so as to protect your work against crashes. I might have missed it, but is there a save button in Photo Raw? If not surely there should be?
My lap top is an AMD A8 with 8 GB of RAM, and seemed to mostly run version 1 of Raw quite well. Aside from task manager and anti virus, nothing much else should have been running on my lap top.
    Best wishes, David Price

    PAUL KRAUSEDecember 9, 2016

After following the flow of comments on this Blog, I decided to make a comment of my own. I have uninstalled the first pre-release and then reinstalled the second pre-release and saw positive results so I guess that is the right way to go. I do see one thing that concerns me and that is a deep red hue in a great deal of images which I have looked at. I did not see this coloration when processing using Lightroom 6.0. For me the fix is to move the color adjustment slider for hue (red) all the way to the right. Just to add information, I have produced these files using a Sony Alpha 99 and the raw file is an ARW file. I am hopeful that this red hue will not be present with the final version release.

  30. Hans Abplanalp

    Hans AbplanalpDecember 13, 2016

First of all, I think ON1 in great.
However, I have a couple of issues:
    1) All my images are in folders in Photoshop CS6 Bridge. When I go to a Bridge folder for the FIRST time using ON1 Browse, it takes ages for the thumbnails to appear. This means that every time I add new images to Bridge it takes several minutes for them to appear in Browse. Is there a remedy?
    2) Most of my Tiff images show up in ON1 Browse as a smudge of pale yellow, blue and pink squiggles. Is this just a glitch in the pre-release?
    Thanks for any help
    Hans

  32. Marguerite Kelstrom

    Marguerite KelstromDecember 15, 2016

Could someone please just tell me how I am supposed to save my work? Is it still a smart re-editable copy? All I have at the bottom of the right panel is “Reset All, Reset”, and a greyed out “Sync”. I tried the Export…and it opened a window I am not familiar with…and did not save as a smart copy.
I took a screen shot of the panel but there is no place to put it here.
So far, I have had to keep using the old version because there is still no from-beginning-to-end instructions re this new version…only many videos with an older raw version that still has the “save” button. I sure would like a “save” button!
As far as the rest…I really haven’t been able to use much. It is sooooo slow on my late 2013 iMac. Maybe I need more RAM??? Apparently I only have 8GB. My photoshop and On1 10 work fine.
    Thank you.

This is about Presets applayed in Browse and Develop.
We can apply preset in these modules.
But how to remove only preset without removing develop settings applayed erlyier (before).

    1. Patrick Smith

      Patrick SmithDecember 16, 2016

That option currently available. Technically, presets are adjusted settings and not separate from individual settings. So we would probably need to add another layer of work to make this happen. If enough people needed this functionality, we will add it in. Go enter the idea into the RAW Project and lets get some votes!

      1. Dariusz Kotarba

        Dariusz KotarbaDecember 16, 2016

        OK.
My thinking was : we have Develop settings and FX settings.
If these settings are “the same family settings”, join them into one module.

  34. john donnellan

    john donnellanDecember 16, 2016

I am becoming seriously annoyed now, comments here appear to be ignored. While I appreciate the fact that this is a pre-release phase I am not holding out much hope for this software. I regret to have handed over my money to effectively become a beta tester, promised photoshop compatible plugin support appears to be minimal and allegedly supported camera files are simply unusable. I should have kept my money in my pocket and waited to see the finished product first before buying.
