Our ship Behind Iceberg in Antarctica from Kayak
On this past January 20, 2026, a windy, but sunny morning, we suited up in dry suits and safety gear to kayak away from our Viking Cruise ship anchored in Antarctica. Air temperature low 30’s, water about the same, wind chill lower. We encountered floating ice varying in size from the size of a picnic basket to the size of a large house. We paddled hopscotch fashion from one iceberg to the next to hang out on the leeward side, gaining some protection and respite from the wind and waves. Suddenly our cruise ship appeared only for a few quick seconds, framed behind two icebergs. I started snapping photos with my iPhone 15 Pro, normal lens, in the moving kayak. I had the phone on a lanyard for safety. My ungloved right hand was very cold and stiff, but I got the shot I wanted. Lucky I guess, and not bad for a 75 year old amateur, working hard at NOT acting his age!
Post processing notes:
I have been using On1 for about ten years after discovering its' layers and non-destructive features, and ease of use compared to Lightroom and Photoshop. For this photo I used only 3 On1 tools: 1. General Tone control in the Develop section 2. Superselect to apply a little Dynamic contrast to the large foreground iceberg 3. Local effects soft vignetteExif information:
