Hand Shake
There’s a spot just north of Quadra Island, BC where the tidal currents rush through narrow channels and bring migrating hake from the bottom to the surface so quickly that their swim bladders prolapse and they die. The eagles have discovered this and congregate by the hundreds to feast on this easy, floating prey. We arrived just at high tide to witness and photograph this marvellous event. While eyeballing the sky for my next shot, I noticed these two circling closer and closer to each other. There was no time to check anything on the camera – it was point and shoot. I shot a burst of ten frames and captured this one. I didn’t know until I got home just how fortunate I was. I love the results and love how ON1 was able to make it into a truly fantastic memory. It’s printed and on display! Nikon Z8 with 70-200 f2.8 VR S with Z TC-2.0X, 1/6400, f29, 400mm, Manual Exposure.
Post processing notes:
ON1 all the way! No Noise AI for clarity; Dynamic Contrast on the birds to improve feathers, talons, and head; Dynamic Contrast for the background to give it some "pop"; Noise Reduction because I still wasn't satisfied with the overall effect; Colour Enhancer for the birds - red - this added more detail to the black wings; Vignette - big softy - of course; Resize AI since the image was heavily cropped; and Restore AI which removed stubborn artifacts and added detail to the overall image.Exif information:
