Badlands Senior
My nephew has a great passion for the stars and space. So I planned ahead for the Milky Way position and moonless night in the Badlands of South Dakota to take some high school senior photos of him. In the pitch black of the night in August 2020, he stood proud, (and very still!) while I setup the shot. With help from my wife using a spotlight on him during setup because of how dark it was, I was able to get things positioned and lined up. My camera was a Canon 5D MKIII using a manual Samyang 14mm lens. This is a single image photo taken by me, Keith Hemmelman, shot at 3200 ISO, f/2.8, 20 seconds, using two off camera flashes at low power. It was a great experience for us being out under the stars together regardless of how the photos turned out. This is a special memory that will last the rest of our lives. (Oh, and I shattered the Samyang lens later in the night at a different location due to a tripod mishap!)
Post processing notes:
I used ON1 Photo RAW to edit this photo. This is a single RAW file, but I made a copy of it as a layer in ON1. This allowed me to mask my nephew out and edit just him on one layer. Then I edited the background layer for the Milky Way, the rest of the scene, and eliminated some slight ghosting around him.Exif information:
