Solitude in White
This image was shot in July, 2023. My best friend was riding her horse in a field and I asked her to stop for a minute so I could get a ‘portrait’ of them. I’ve been editing in On1 in its various iterations since it first became available decades ago. I created this composite using an interior background that I had to make it a more classical image. I had it printed at 16×24 on canvas as a gift for her and it now hangs proudly in her livingroom.
2023 was a very difficult year for both of us. Alison’s husband died 10 months before this photo was taken and then, while I was working on the editing for it, I learned that my (adult) son died by suicide in Vancouver. I live in New Brunswick and it was an awful shock as you can imagine. Photography and editing helped save my sanity.
Post processing notes:
The only software used was On1 either 2022 or 2023 (I've misplaced the external drive with the original photo on it). I imported the background image, from a batch I had purchased, as a layer over my photo of my friend. Then, I reduced the opacity of the top layer and I used the masking brush feathered to about 25% to bring the horse image to the fore, eliminating the field background that was in the original. It took a while to blend the two together to end up with the final image. Then, I combined the two layers into a New Stamped Layer for final touch ups. It was exported as a jpeg and sent to the lab for processing.Exif information:
