Hippo Hug
On a recent trip to the Serengeti in Tanzania, we stopped for lunch near a hippo pool where close to 50 hippos were gathered— nose to nose, tail to tail—practically piled on top of one another. Just in front of this massive group, was a mother hippo and her calf engaged in loving embraces and playful sparring, as if she was teaching her baby the nuances of hippo behavior. Hippos are often portrayed as dangerous and aggressive, but like us, much of that behavior is rooted in protection and fear. When left undisturbed, the tenderness between a mother and her baby, and even within the larger pod, feels strikingly familiar. Witnessing this “hippo hug” was a beautiful reminder that, like us, they too are social animals—capable of deep affection, connection, and care. Their bond reflected the emotional richness that runs through so many in the animal kingdom.
Post processing notes:
I used ON1 Photo Raw 2025 to post process this photo. I started by using the Brilliance AI panel in the Develop module to level out some of the harsh lighting and adjust the white balance. Then I fine-tuned the contrast, reduced the highlights and shadows, and increased the vibrancy manually in the Tone and Color panel to bring out details in the hippos’ eyes and pink skin until I felt it matched what I had seen in reality. To export the image with a watermark for sharing online, I created an export preset where I uploaded my watermark file into the Extras Manager and then adjusted the location, inset, size, and opacity of the watermark. This preset I can now use again in the future. I used to have to use a separate program to add a watermark after post-processing, but with ON1 I can literally do every edit I would need to in one program.Exif information:
