Great Gray Owl at Sunset in Maine
Great Gray Owls are rare for humans to set eyes upon. This Owl likely traveled from deep in the forests of Canada to Maine in the Winter for food. They weigh 2.5 pounds and 2+ feet in length. It remained in our area for approximately 1.5 months. I found it by following mobbing Crows and the owl let me in its space for photo ops. It would be most active hunting for ground moles beneith the snow as the daylight was nearing the end of the day. Hence, with the Sun setting in the west, the sunlight was somewhat orange and brightened one side of the owl and the tree it was standing in which is the basis for this photo.
Post processing notes:
I utilized ON1 to swap out the original background sky which was gray and esstionally flat for a color pop that aligned with the setting sun. In addition, I sought to balance the shadows and highlights that differed in contrast due to the setting Sun which ON1 did beautifully.Exif information:
