ON1 Insider – January Edition

One of my resolutions for 2021 is for more interaction with customers. I’ve been working at ON1 since the very beginning, July 2005. If you heard or read somewhere about how we started working in a small office with only folding tables and chairs, a set of those was my desk.

This new series aims to give an insider’s look into what we’re working on (and thinking about) behind the scenes. A lot more goes on here than meets the eye. Let’s face it, 2020 gave all of us many challenges. I see 2021 as an opportunity for each of us as things begin to open up, and we can all safely get back to doing what we love, photography.

Feel free to ask questions and share your thoughts, and I will answer them the best I can. I hope you enjoy this short and informal monthly update. I plan on including internal updates, industry news, and other random thoughts. Now, onto the good stuff.

Product News
The absolute best plugins are coming! A while back, we noticed more and more new customers were adding ON1 to their existing workflows, but the integration between ON1 and these other apps still isn’t what we envisioned. One of this year’s significant product initiatives is to deliver tighter integration for specific software workflows at a level no other plugin does. Does anyone remember smart photos?

Most plugins don’t handle working with multiple photos, keep your edits re-editable across applications, or batch process photos. This will change for ON1 plugins in 2021.

Dan and his team are also working on some great new technologies for noise reduction and a host of other updates and fixes, but he says that’s all I’m allowed to write at the moment, so stay tuned. 🙂

Note – Keep an eye out for the ON1 Capture One plugins coming to our products (Effects, Portrait, Resize, and HDR) in a few short weeks. Anyone using Capture One will want to check out this new integration level between our plugins and this workflow. Specifically, for batch processing and multi-image handling. Dan will have a sneak peek video showing everything in the short term.

We’ve also partnered with Obsidian Dawn, who specializes in creating custom brush collections. Make sure to check out the newly released Landscape Brush Collection.

Some ON1 Plus News
We have a great year planned for ON1 Plus. We have a ton of new members who took advantage of our end of year offer, and all of us look forward to seeing the many new faces.

Word is the ON1 Plus team is working on a Fresh Start course due out soon. A great way to kick-off 2021.

Industry News
Any Lightroom 6 users out there? Check out the recent article from our friends at PetaPixel.  For ON1 customers using Lightroom 6, there isn’t a whole lot we can do if somehow the ON1 plugins stop working. Keep in mind the current ON1 plugins are fully compatible with Lightroom Classic CC. Maybe it’s time for Lightroom 6 users still holding on to take a closer look at ON1 Photo RAW? Just saying.

Misc.
Hats off to our support team (looking at you, Kahlie, Jonny, and Cody), who spent many hours over the holidays working to make sure our customers still received the best-in-class support! They are a hard-working group and go above and beyond for our customers day in and day out.

Hi, nice to hear from you. Can you update on any plans to support Big Sur and/or Apple silicon in the pipeline?

    Thanks

Big Sur is currently supported and Apple Silicon is in the plans, but no official release date yet. With that being said, there aren’t any major issues running ON1 on either.

Like the ON1 Photo RAW 2021 app. In the next version, focus on speed. Once you have that done, go back and make it faster. Don’t get me wrong, I like it the way it is now, but I would love it if it were faster.

    Hi Patrick,

noticed on1 Video is no more present on the website. Will it return at some point? While we are mostly a photogprahy studio, my wife doing weddings is thinking about adding very short videos, to make slideshows more lively. I was really looking forward to on1 Video 🙂

    Thanks,
    /Petr

It’s still a project we are working on, just taking much longer than we anticipated. When there is news about it, I’ll post it.

    hello,
i’d like to have gradient map for color grading and deep black and white.
also same pen tool than photoshop with possibility to re-edit points, save selection, combine selection,…

    Best regards

Multiple color range selections would be nice, as sometimes, you are not able to cover the selection with just one sampled color and its range.

Thanks for once again reaching out to your customers.

I am very happy with Photo Raw 2021, which I use as a stand alone. I am pleased to hear that you are now working on further improving noise reduction and sharpening.

In my case I am running PR 2021 on a relatively lowly powered laptop, but it is stable and performs well. I’m not too woried about speed, because I suspect that the main thing that is slowing down PR 2021, on my laptop, is the hardware and not the coding.

I would very much like to see improvements to the Photo Raw Project, to make it quicker and easier to review and to vote on ideas.

Let us hope for another great year for ON1.

    Best wishes David Price

There is still way too much disparity between the cloud and desktop versions. Still no tag support on mobile? You can’t even see any basic info about photos (even date shot!) Clicking the “info” button just toggles the image name on and off. Not particularly useful. The lack of a comprehensive tagging method (between cloud and desktop) was why I left Lightroom. Please don’t make me regret my decision (or, worse, go back to LR).

    Hi Patrick,

Nice to see the overall evolution. I’m using PR since it came out. I’m particularly glad to see improved noise reduction is on the way.

Robustness has improved a lot over the years. Unfortunately, speed has always been a problem on my Win10 powerful machine. Thanks to your excellent support team, I keep faith.

Can you say more about the improved link with Capture One? It is very interesting since raw rendering in CO (and DXO) are still king.

    Thanks,

So many months some of your customers ask for map including all the photos (from folder, album, whole cataloged folder…), and also let us choose the map start on the place we want instead “Portland” ! Add B&W color profile (greyscale) for import them as well as color srgb, adobe and other ones. I’m not in hurry for get a “ON1 video” neither plugins, ON1 PR should be my only photo software ! My two requests are not so hard to add vs all the features you have yet improved from the beginning.
    Cheers!

    1. Are you able to reduce the file size of edits in ON1 when using it as a plug-in to LRCC? I carried out the same edits in ON1 and PS and On1’s file size was almost twice as big.
    2. It would be very helpful if ON1 did not close when clicking “done” after using it as a plug-in to LRCC. Please keep ON1 and the file that has been edited in ON1 open and give an option to close the file and a second option to close ON1.

For me, ON1 Photo Raw 2021 is the best version yet produced by ON1, except for the keyword module. Don’t change a thing, except the keyword module. Adding new features is great, just don’t change or cause the new features to change what is now in the 2021 version, except for improving the keyword module. The keyword module is the reason I was able to migrate from Lightroom. Unfortunately, it’s been a disappointment while all other areas of the program have continually improved. Keep up the great work, keep making improvements, but please let’s revamp the keyword module.

I’ve been an On1 advocate since I moved from Lightroom 6 years ago (after looking at everything out there because I was so upset with Lightroom). Its been my go to product and remains that BUT some modules are so outdated I’ve had to buy other products to do resize, Denise, and sharpen. I don’t want to do that. I want to do everything in On1 except maybe painting effects. I am glad you mention Denoise but as a 40 year plus software exec I believe transparency is critical to the health of any software company so putting out a real road map, do what you have been doing in the past – provide more than was expected. And as a Mac user who will be moving to the M1 platform soon please make a universal product soon.

Lastly, please make your Facebook page more than a photo page. It is really frustrating not to be able to talk to other On1 user and On1 staff about issues. And I really miss Whitney

We’re on it! Another great place to talk with other ON1 customers is the Plus forums. Also, a lot of people use the FB page as a place to report issues so we have to try and make sure those requests get directed into the proper channel. There are so many computer configurations these days that it’s better for our customers and our support staff to be able to collect the bare minimum of information up front. Having customers file support tickets is the best way to do that at the moment.

    Patrick,

I love ON1 Photo RAW. I have been disappointed by the 2020 and 2021 updates, but I understand the pressures that you have been under and I am looking forward to great thing in the 2022 update. I dropped my ON1 Plus because of your emphases on 360 over Photo RAW.

I am VERY happy that you have reopened a better line of communication with users. I have missed the ON1 News over the last couple of years. I am always anxious to hear what you are working on and what you hope to be able to do in the future.

I wish you good success in the future.

If there is one thing I need, it is a fast working spot removal tool. At my last look, it’s where Lightroom has ON1 well and truly beaten and it is the single thing stopping me shipping my Lightroom Catalogues over to ON1. Having said that I am curious to know how long it would take to import my main 1.5 terrabyte Lightroom catalogue.

Just about to replace my 2018 Mini with the M1 Mini and glad to know M1 support is in the works. I have 2019 and the slowness of the spotting tool was a real time problem editing scans of old Tri-x negatives with the inevitable dust spots. So great news you have sped things up. I’ll be going for the current 2021.5 upgrade.
