Laurie did a great video last week on capturing time-lapse footage with an iPhone. I wanted to showcase how I use my Android (a Pixel) to capture time-lapse and do a little comparison between the time-lapse output of a smartphone vs a big camera. It’s a short video, but somehow I manage to wander into a discussion of determining what interval to choose for your time-lapse as well as optimizing time-lapse shutter speeds. Below the break I added a little cheat sheet for the interval calculation:

(A note on this video’s audio quality: I shot this on my brand new Nikon D850 and I messed up and forgot to check the audio levels since this is normally all set in my D500 and Sony A7s. My apologies that it isn’t as clear as usual. Lesson learned.)
INTERVAL = (period of time you want to capture in seconds) / (24 X’s the number of seconds you want your time-lapse video to be)
So if you want to capture 10 minutes in a 10 second time-lapse the calculation would be: 600 seconds / 240 =  2.5 second interval
For a 2.5 second interval you should set your shutter speed to 1.25 seconds.
