I'm Back & February is Gonna Be A Blast!

Hi all! Whew! Its been a while huh? Well, not really 🙂 It’s only been a month since I’ve been in here coaching. But I’m happy to announce that I’m your new guest coach for the month of February.

ON1 Plus started as “12 Months with Matt” 2 years ago when I used to work for ON1 full time. Then, last year, we rolled it into ON1 Plus and this website was born. It’s really cool to see where the community has come since then, and I’m happy to be back with you guys for the next four weeks. And even though I don’t work for ON1 anymore, I still use/teach the apps, and I’ve got some cool stuff planned for February.
The main thing I wanted to cover this month was Layers. Raw edits are great, but there’s going to be times where you need to work with multiple images and layers are the key for that. In fact, even if you don’t ever go into the “official” Layers app in ON1, you use layers all the time when you use Filters in Effects or even (in a way) the Local Adjustments in Develop.
I won’t take up much more of your time other than to say Hi again. And to also let you know that Hudson and I will be doing another Reverse Photo Challenge. If you didn’t see last years, it was a blast, and we got a ton of great feedback on it. The new challenge survey is open now go vote! And of course, Hudson will be joining me for the monthly photo critiques, and I’ll have a live Q&A Febuary 22nd, register now.
I’m really looking forward to hanging out with you guys over the next month. Take care and let me know if you have any questions.
PS: I know I used a few “Hudson and I” or “Hudson and me” phrases here. If they’re grammatically incorrect in any way, I take full responsibility and kindly ask that you resist your urge to point it out. Instead, just ask photography/editing related questions. Remember… the wise man’s proverb from the days of yore: “If you correct people’s grammar, just remember that nobody likes you” 🙂

Great to have you back Matt! It sounds very exciting to learn more about the layers module. I would love it if you could show an example of replacing the sky (especially in difficult places like between tree-branches). Is there a trick of making the blending look more natural?

Hi. Honestly, the real skill in replacing skies is picking the right photos. You can’t take a gloomy day and make it sunny. Once you have the right two photos to start with, pulling it off is hugely easier. But we’ll talk about that as the month goes on 🙂

Hi Matt, and we’re looking forward to hearing more of your insights and expertise. The focus on layers integration with the RAW workflow is a particularly useful topic.

Welcome back, Matt, great to have you here again, excellent education, snarky comments and all 🙂
Look forward to a month of layers, and as always when you teach there will be much more to pick up from your tutorials.

    Hi Matt,
I joined ON1 Plus at the end of last year, but I have already learned quite a few things from some of your previous ON1 tutorials.
I am really excited to hearing your expertise on layers -and on Layers too 😉 -, and from what I have already seen, I am pretty sure that it’s gonna be happy and successful learning !

    Hey Matt,
So good to hear you’re back, I wish it was a permanent gig, you do a spectacular job of it.
You should let us know where you are the rest of the year so we can keep tabs on you. Your energy and teaching delivery is the best.
I had bought Photo 9, then 9.5 and even 10 but for some reason I either never had the time to dive in or the departure from PS to this different sort of platform just didn’t jive for me. But when RAW arrived, it caught my attention and now I’m soaking up all I can learn to get a handle on ON1 and this set of apps. So far, I’m really enjoying it but being a long long time PS user, it’s still a departure from what I’m used to. With that said, I think getting a solid insight into dealing with layers within PhotoRAW will make a big difference. Naturally, it’s all very similar in how layers interact, but working inside a non-destructive workflow and the way that masks work in RAW is where I need a few insights. If you could do some comparisons between PS and ON1-layers, that would be beneficial.
Regardless of that, it’s great to hear you’ve stepping in for a month (I wish it was longer) and looking forward to your teaching, great energy and valued insights. Cheers brother!

    Hi Matt,
One of my favorite Ps tutorial books is your book on Layers so I am eagerly awaiting your month of coaching.
The beauty of On1 Raw is that it is quite intuitive to use and it is capable of really creative editing. But currently I’m rooted in Ps and there are enough differences between the two types of software that it can be frustrating to use – the learning curve is slowing down my processing time. I really love what On1 Raw has to offer, and I’m excited to delve further into it. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to your tutorials!

    Welcome back Matt,
Great to hear you will be focusing on layers. That is the one thing I miss from Photoshop in Lightroom. And the one thing I am not all that comfortable in using in PhotoRaw.Can you teach it in a way that will help Photoshop users will be able to take advantage of?
    thanks

Aw, when I first started reading this I thought “Cool! Matt & Hudson are going to show us their best east-coast/west-coast 5-layer dip recipe for Super Bowl Sunday!” Then I remembered that neither of you probably care about the Super Bowl – seeing as your local teams aren’t in it. It’s tough being a Patriots fan and having to lose all those extra weekend days rooting for the team in playoff games rather than out getting photographs. 😉 Glad to have you back on the clock Matt – you are a great educator and I never fail to learn something from your lessons. Looking forward to the next few weeks. Best regards, Alan

    Welcome back Matt,
will we find you as instructor at lynda.com with your On Photo 10, On1 Photo RAW 2017, and LR courses? My Company (21000 employes) tried Kelbyone twice at my recommendation, mostly because of your eminent LR courses, but IT department finaly gave in on Kelbyone since the lessons never stoped randomly buffering . We never got any problem with Lynda.com what so ever.

    Matt,
You seem a little thinned skinned re your grammar issue, so am I.
If it helps use what I use. A very kind and wise man once told me that ‘Everyone is ignorant of something. No one knows it all. It is a mark of a good man when they know someone is in error but refrain from conveying that ignorance in public and instead help guide that person along their way in a much more private setting’. We would all be better off if we practiced a little more kindness and respect for others.
And if that doesn’t help – remember. If they are so d___ smart they wouldn’t need you to teach then how to use the software they bought (without knowing how to use it) or how to perfect their camera skills.
    Welcome back!
    Bill

Hi Matt. Welcome back. I’m sure I speak for the on1 community when I say that we missed you. just remember, if we wanted grammar lessons, we would have joined a book club and not the on1 plus group. So you go guy. I’m looking forward to your month with us.

Very pleased to hear you are covering layers. By far the least intuitive part of ON1 for me. As a never-PS user – a PS avoider in fact – I have tried and failed several times in the past to get my head around layers. Most teachers take it for granted that you are on board with all sorts of stuff from PS. So – looking forward to hearing from you. You have taught me so much in the past. No pressure, then.

I find it interesting that my prior comment has been removed.
You know… the one where I responded to your “If you correct people’s grammar, just remember that nobody likes you” and state that it seems very unprofessional.
If you feel the need to censor comments, you COULD just refund my subscription and I will remove ON1 products from my machine.
