It would be great to have a more in depth description in the manual of how the sliders actually affect the image and at what level. There are so many different terms and controls ( detail, contrast, sharpening, clarity, dynamic HDR, micro contrast or sharpening, effects on small /medium/large, etc.) used that improve the picture without a more detailed descrition as to why? When searching these terms out on the internet there are often conflicting descriptions on their function . I would love to know how these sliders actually work.

Really helpful video. I have tended to rely on Dynamic Contrast to add detail, with an occasional boost to structure and or contrast. This video provides me with a range of opportunities to explore, in particular the clarity and detail in Tone Enhancer and the tools in HDR Look, neither of which I have made much use of. Perhaps my over reliance on certain tools is a because they are the ones that get most mention in the other tuition videos – a point worth considering for future videos?
Thanks again,
Richard.

Thanks for the very useful video. I’ve never used HDR look for anything but now I can see how it could be handy for either building contrast or reducing it as needed.
As Alan commented above it would be interesting to know if say, the glow that can be applied in HDR look is different from using the Glow filter effect, which has way more adjustments available.

I’m almost always trying for great detail in my images. I really appreciate this video right on my favorite topic! As with other videos Dylan covers so much info clearly, and the pace is just right for me to learn.
There’s some similarity among the terms and tools: structure, detail, clarity, dynamic contrast and sharpening. As with color saturation versus vibrance they’re subtly different. I’d like to read about and hear about how they are intended to work.
I also gently apply reverse approach to some areas which aren’t the selection of interest. Dynamic Contrast is often helpful with negative slider values. Glow, for me, usually makes colors more intense than I want.
I hadn’t been familiar with the HDR Look filter for enhancing how detail elements appear. I had only been aware of its handling areas of too-dark or too-light. Thanks for showing how to use it.
Regarding ‘sharpening’. Too often I wind up with edge halos of white, and artifacts or excessive prominence of some less important details. To me Micro Sharpening has rarely been helpful. For your example alley image you were getting very nice results which I don’t get for my images. Your heron image details also look great with your adjustments.
I really like that ON1 Photo Raw lets us reduce Opacity of Effects and Local adjustments. For Develop the only way I know is if you create a duplicate layer upon which adjustments are made, and then adjust layer opacity. Then you can create a new stamped layer. Kinda clunky approach.
In your video you didn’t cover how Resize can help such as when we want a tight crop of an image. Of course there are practical limits. And complications. Noise reduction after resizing larger can have very low effective result. The then bigger elements seem to get ignored compared to original size.

Hi Dylan, great video presented very well and at a nice cadence. I’m simply blown away by the capabilities of ON1 Photo RAW 2024. Many features but easy to learn with use. The AI noise reduction combined with the sharpening of the heron’s feathers is impressive. Not sure I can say this but I don’t see myself opening my Topaz programs much anymore.
