Smart Import detect possible duplicates

I don’t always remember to delete my memory card after import. Lightroom detects any photos that have previously been imported and deselects them in the import dialog. This functionality is needed in ON1 as I would have to remember and manually deselect them.

The Lightroom feature that you have described, was the main reason from me walking away from Lightroom.

    Dear ON1,
if you are tempted to introduce such a feature, then please include an ‘off switch’. So that your loyal users, don’t have to use it. (i.e. Just as you have done with the new ‘import’ facility).

    No, I don’t want duplicates.

But, Lightroom was not able to keep track of things. Lightroom kept on wrongly labelling my files as duplicates. Then Lightroom would refuse to allow the raw files to be opened and/or edited. Which is why I walked away from Lightroom, and moved over to PR.

Besides, as I use Windows Explorer to import my files from the camera, it automatically flags up any duplicate files. So, there aren’t any duplicates… unless I decide to create them.

But, I do realise that some people love Lightroom’s Import facilities, and therefore I supported ON1’s decision to develop an Import Module.

One of the great, and growing strengths of ON1’s products, is that they don’t impose any particular method of working. i.e. there is always more than one way to do anything, and you can decide to do things in your own way. So, as long as there is an ‘Off Switch’, so that I can ‘Opt Out’ of importing, then I will be quite happy. But, if ON1 ever decided to delete the ‘off switch’, and to force a Lightroom like Import system, then I would have to start looking for an alternative.

    Best wishes, David Price.

Yep, I also use Windows Explorer to copy from camera to harddrive. The current Import module annoys me, because it immediately starts loading images of the entire card in the camera (which can takes ages), while I usually only want to import the ones on the latest created subdirectory on the card.

And it also autmoatically starts loading the images on the second card, which I usually use for back-up only; so it actually loads every image twice…

I wish there was te possibility to select the directory/ies you want ON1PR to import.

Please add this with an option to disable. Import seems to be broken on my Mac Pro when importing from an iPhone7+. It does about 400 and stops. Since I can’t select the sort order on the import window and it appears to import them in random order importing 3800 pics from the phone is essentially impossible. If imcouldmskipmdupes and restart all would be well.

Of course you could fix the import too.

Please do add a filter to the Import option that would allow previously imported photos to be excluded. The import tool needs to be smarter than it currently is.

Yes, please do add “Do Not Copy Duplicates” to the import menu.

Also, add the ability to create a robust structured date import to allow the user to match their existing (pre-ON1) folder structure.

For example: My Pictures/Imported Images/YYYY/YYYY-MM/YYYY-MM-DD. Of course, others will have an different preference. The Import function should support that customization.

This is the last item is the number-one issue that may force me back to LLCC.

Yes, please add a “do not import duplicates” to the import function. It’s absurd that if I forget to delete my memory card after an import then the next time I import I have to either deselect all the ones already imported (not easy) or deselect everything and then labouriously go through the card and select only the new photos.

Please please introduce the ability to prevent the import of duplicates. There are a myriad of circumstances where the prevention of duplicate imports is essential.

Agree! There must be an option to not import duplicates! I was really irritated when i did my second import and realized that i got duplicates of my images. Adding that option should be a small programming task with a huge benefit for the users. Just do it!

Pretty much every photo application I have ever used on the Mac, except this one, detect duplicates and offers the option not to import. I was surprised when this did not happen with Photo RAW. Now I know it doesn’t do this, I will need to find a workaround to avoid the copies.

Detecting duplicates during import is a critical feature! There is also an opportunity to be smart enough to keep track of the metadata of files I’ve deleted to prevent them from being re-imported (at least for images deleted from cataloged folders).

While we are at it Delete after Import would be a nice option to have.

I guess I’ll need to use a different tool in the meantime to do my importing. Anyone have a good suggestion?
