Photo RAW Pre-Release Update Coming Monday

First, I’d like to thank everyone who has downloaded the first Pre-Release for Photo RAW. Your feedback has been tremendous in helping us discover new issues we’ve been able to address quickly. We are excited to announce the second pre-release will be available Monday evening (Dec 5th). This update will address many of the outstanding issues and more. Rather than go over the entire list I’ll call out some of the more frequent issues.
- Significant stability increases (which will also increase even more leading up to December 19th)
- Fixed memory leaks which lead to slow performance and instability for some users
- Fixed several issues in Browse and changed the way Indexed Folders work
- This will make indexing faster and use less system resources. Our goal is to continue making Indexed Folders work in the background so there is little to no impact on your normal Browse usage. Keep in mind all indexing is paused when you are working in any app other than Browse (Develop, Effects, Layers, Resize)
- Fixed issue with Wacom pens not registering click events making Zoom and Masking Bug tools difficult
- Fixed issue where exported photos didn’t match the preview
- Fixed issue where Browse fit view didn’t match Develop/Effects
- Photos from the Canon 7D, 60D, 80D now show the full image dimensions
- Improved DNG processing, fixed some color issues with DNG
- Fixed an issue the Nikon D810 photos that caused a crash
- You can now browse Extras in the file browser inside of Layers (again)
- Improved support for many Panasonic cameras
We’re excited to say that this update will solve many of the issues we’ve seen and heard from the ON1 Community. At the same time, we’re continuing the drive to our official release on Dec 19th – ON1 Photo RAW 2017. The crop tool as well as the navigator/loupe/histogram are almost done and we’ll continue to drive out bugs ahead of the release.

In ACR, I found it really useful to be able to call up the ‘last setting’, particularly when you had several pictures with similar exposures. I don’t see this feature in On1 Raw developer so it would be a really useful addition. If it is there, where is it?

There are ways to do this and new ways to do this more efficiently with Photo RAW. Are the pictures in a similar setting or from the same shoot also? If so, you can sync, copy, & paste settings from one photo to another pretty easily. Without knowing exactly how you are using it in ACR I can’t say much more. For example, as a plug-in, standalone, etc. Feel free to post your steps right here and I will do my best to give the short steps in Photo RAW.

I also had crash problems when opening RAW but the first update seems to have cured that – can’t wait for the final version!

Looking forward to the update. I have to say I’m enjoying Photo RAW and am very happy at how quickly I can get really good photos out of my raw files. Though I am looking forward to it being more stable in the new update and the full release, I’m sure it will get there 🙂

We will see, but I am still worried. In fact, Browse itself is the problem. Dragging the slider, or even doing nothing, blocking the app for 10-30 secs. Not sure how it is done technically, but it should be imo delegated to the separate thread, having excactly ZERO impact on the user experience.
We don’t need indexing to be fast imo, we need it to be reliable and under control to don’t disturb user experience. Looking forward to the Monday release and keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanx! Once again I really hope you are getting a good highlight and shadow engine in the final version! So far Luminar had the same problems in the highlight range after there release for two weeks! After mucphun updated Luminar for two days they have a much better raw quality like photo raw! But I like your app a bit more so I hope you get it done!

That’s great to hear that the issues are being addressed especially the memory leak and resource challenges. Am looking forward to the updates and again would appreciate insights to make the most of RAW such as recommended settings for Wacoms, etc.

I am happy to hear about this quick update. Like the others folks, I am also experiencing some of these issues. Memory leak seems to be a show stopper for me at the moment. That said, I am sure the ON1 guys are hard at work ironing out these issue.

It’s exciting to be a part of the “pre-release” or “beta” version of a software. I’ve never had the opportunity before, and I can appreciate all the intricacies of such a massive undertaking. I loaded a folder of RAF images. They loaded in but very slow. Then I made some basic adjustments, then I went into FX made a couple of changes, went to layers and under extras in brought up files on my hard drive, did it all over and now back in layers and under extras clicked on paper and it brought up all the files on my hard drive.

I’m a holdout till Dec 19 but with all the fixes rolling out Monday I just may not wait.
Thanks to the developers for their hard work. Also thanks to company visionaries for understanding what users want and believing it can be delivered. I invested in the vision because it’s exciting and seems possible based on what On1 has accomplished in the past.
Also, I’m old enough to know the meaning of the term Vaporware; coined when releases from much larger and better financed software companies dragged on and on forever. It doesn’t bother me if any of your self-imposed timelines were not exactly met. Goals are good. Had goals not been set, Raw would not have made it this far.
And the cost of admission? Yikes, I don’t know how you do it. When I bought CS6 Extended it was retailing for around $600.

Do you have a sense as to what the differences will be in disk space and memory requirements between Lightroom and On1 RAW? This is not an issue on my IMac, but on my MacBook Pro, I’m going to choose one or the other to do quick edits in the field. Due to the issue of having two catalogs in Lightroom, it makes more sense for me to use On1 RAW for this purpose in the field, but would be interested in what the comparative storage and memory requirements will be.

Based on my experience so far with indexing a folder with 18 RAW images, this beta will not go anywhere near my image folders containg my 40,000 DNG images. I simply hope that the December 19th GOLD release date is met and that ALL of the issues are addressed.
Until Lightroom Catalog Import is available, the software is unusable. There is no way I am going to toss away 10 years of RAW edits.
When introducing a product, one must be careful of run-away marketing — that one does not over promise and under deliver. You have already missed your FALL release schedule (with no announcement that that would happen).
Please call the pre-release what is — a beta.

I agree with most of that, particularly the big problem with not being able to import the lightroom library and thus having to re-do in on1raw (or rather do again) every adjustment I’ve ever made to every photo in lightroom. On1raw has now become an alternative not a companion product. Big problem to everyone who’s using lightroom extensively until now.
I’m also ignoring the interim update (because I’m currently restricted to a 10gb monthly broadband limit and on1raw issue 1 with videos has already taken up much of that, issue 2 download would take up to much of any remainder, and the ‘final release’ with all its extras in the same month would be a complete no-go). Besides I’d rather wait until it’s finished, fly working and god to go.

How did they miss their FALL release schedule? From where I am, Fall is from September 22 to December 21. Even the final December 19 release is in the fall, technically speaking. What do you consider Fall?
Everyone knows that Pre-Release is synonymous with Beta, however, it’s a bit more non-techy to call it pre-release. The folks at ON1 were very clear that this build before December 19 would have bugs and glitches. The same goes for this second “beta” released yesterday.

Hi,
Please, please, please … don’t send out file download instruction to every Technical Support Request logged. I just received 36 emails telling me “The first update to the Photo RAW prerelease (version 2) is ready for download!”.
As this is a private pre-release with only those who have pre-purchased ON1 Photo RAW or those who are ON1 PLUS members involved just send out the notifications to those involved rather than multiple emails to the one person … it doesn’t encourage us to report anomalies if this is to happen.

I just loaded up pre-release version 2. The instructions that came with the email were very detailed and advised that after the install I should be presented with an activation sign in screen which I was not. When I go in to the Help menu and look at the details under About Photo Raw there is no indication that this is a new pre-release it just says Raw 2017. Bottom left corner says 11.0.0.3361. How can I tell if this is the new release? BTW I also uninstalled the program and tried from scratch with the same result. Anyone else seeing something different?

(second pre-release) Sorry, but the browser is still very very slow. When there are multiple NEF files (Nikon D810) into a folder it takes the application sometimes minutes to open the folder or the app crash.

When I open an image with Photoshop CC and then go to ON 1 Raw from Edit and edit my image when it comes back in to photoshop the image is unusable it comes back in as a mass of colours. This was the case in version 1 and still an issue in version 2. Speed in film strip mode to browse images is super fast but as soon as I turn on a filter for my 5 star images browsing slows to a crawl. I’ll keep putting it through its paces and reporting issues as expected from we Beta users, great potential for this product if we can shore these issues up.

Latest gremlin that I have found is that my cursor becomes invisible in the preview pane. You have to guess where is by thumbnails lighting up. The cursor is visible on the side panes.
Local adjustments with the brush in develop still very jittery with long delays between brush strokes. Presets still reluctant to fully load. Otherwise this software has huge potential and I’m looking forward to the thoroughbred version.
