forty fourteen
Photo taken July 12th 2024 while Union Pacific “Big Boy” 4014 was on static display in Roseville, California. For the uninitiated, UP4014 is the world’s largest operational steam locomotive and goes on infrequent excursions as part of the railroad’s heritage fleet.
Post processing notes:
All of my edits across every photo have inexplicably gone "poof" from my ON1 image catalog so unfortunately I cannot describe exactly what changes were made, but my most typical edits play around with bumping contrast and tweaking exposure (especially given the intense sunlight that day.) Color adjustments were used behind the scenes to balance out the overall composition underneath filters. Considering the age of the locomotive I wanted to give the photo a bit of an aged look with the not-quite-sepia tone applied. Diluting the photo gives more attention to the interaction between man and immense machine rather than his brightly-colored safety vest and the bright blue sky. It's an interaction that could've happened 70 years ago or just last month -- something truly timeless.Exif information:
