Thanks, Again!  It Was a Great Time

It is always a pleasure guest coaching here at ON1 Plus.  There is such a high-caliber of photographers here in this community, and I am always ecstatic when I can teach you new tricks!   Hopefully, after this month I have shown you a few more things about Artistry.  It is not the easiest thing to comprehend nor teach.

You may have noticed in this series that we just covered the artistic tools.  We did this for a reason.  I cannot teach you to develop a style, that has to come from within.  The one thing I can do though is show you the artistic tools at your disposal to help you draw that style out.

You can stream all the lessons in this series here and or download for viewing offline.

As you work on your images from here on out, remember our workflow:  Tone, Color, Finishing Effects.   The important note here is that Finishing Effects can be broken down into Tone Effects, Color Effects, and Artistic Effects.  This systematic approach will help you on your way to developing a style I can promise you that.

Think of this workflow as a checklist of sorts.  I am a systematic person, contrary to popular belief; I think more logically than I do artistically.  This approach has helped me understand photo processing and demystify the subjective nature of photo editing.

Certainly, all rules are meant to be broken.  I do not want you to restrict yourself in any way.  Use this guide for as long as you need to.  Over time you will develop your own systematic approach and will have images like no other photographer, and that is exciting!

I have developed a very in depth training course for Artistic processing in Photoshop.  It is an 8-hour course that comes complete with all my creative tools to include an excellent Photoshop extension, Palette Effects.

As my way of saying thanks, I am dropping it down to the launch price (for ON1 Plus Members) until September 9th until midnight (CST).  Here is the link to learn more!

Until next time!

Thanks much Blake for stopping by and being the guest coach this month – as always, learned a lot – and gave me lots of ideas on how to better pursue an artistic expression. I’m working up some arm strength to better hit that cowbell, er, dodge&burn… ;-)

Haha, bang that cow bell. Nothing ever wrong with more cowbell (or dodging and burning for that matter)!

      I appreciate your comments!

Blake, you are right, the subject matter you have covered is very difficult to teach but you have proven to be a master at simplifying these things and making them more accessible. Your encouragement to learn how and why effects are being applied, I think, will give us all ultimate control over our final images. Blindly applying effects to images is like using the Auto button on your camera. While it can randomly yield good results, they are not repeatable if you don’t understand how you got there in the first place.

Aside from all the invaluable advice you shared, I think you also highlighted just how powerful ON1 Photo RAW really is. Approaching it systematically gives me almost infinite possibilities while working in post.

Personally, you have helped me to alter the way I am looking at the world. For the first time, I am previsualizing, in a very different way, what a scene will look like in the final post-processed stage. Knowing ON1 Photo RAW the way I do now has enabled me to, not only produce better photographs but be more imaginative in the field.

Thank you very much for the instruction and inspiration.

That is so great to hear! You got it, it takes some people a while to figure that out, but you got it right away. Previsualization is so powerful, it can save you in so many scenarios. Like last night I was out shooting and the conditions weren’t the best and the sunset was practically nonexistent, but there was enough information in the scene that I decided to shoot, knowing what I could do with it in post production.

Without pre visualization, I may never have clicked the shutter due to the conditions, but like G.I. JOE always said, knowing is half the battle!

I really appreciate your comments and am so thankful I could help you out this month. I feel like my job is done :)

Hi Blake I have both enjoyed and learned from all of your broadcasts with On1 the latest being no exception. I was excited to learn that you were going to be our guest coach and you certainly did not disappoint. I look forward to your next visit and wonder how you will take yourself to your next level and what that might look like!

    Kind Regards

Thanks, Steve! Glad I could help even in some small way. I really wish I knew what was next, haha. I just take it in strides and experiment and see what comes about. It should be no different the next time I am around :) I appreciate you!

As you state above, your job may be done, but now ours is just beginning. A wonderful month of super videos, and now we must put them into practice and master them as we go forward. Terrific month we had, great teaching methods and videos. You have a wonderful, easy way of teaching that is simple to grasp, on complex subjects. Hope to see you back again, in the mean time, I have signed up in f-64 as well.

    Thank you again.

I will be back for the Grand Slam! Thank you for your kind remarks, I am overjoyed by them today! I appreciate you for being a good ‘student’.

    Hi Blake
I thoroughly enjoy your tutorials and always learn something new. You tend to teach techniques that I don’t often see from others on the web.
Your use of blending modes and your colour palette have extended my ability to ‘craft’ my images using both PS and ON1.

You present your material very clearly and it is easy to follow you. I have referred to your videos often to remind me of your methods.

I look forward to learning more from you in due course.

    Best wishes

Thank you Blake for a great series of instructional videos and advice. I will be watching them several more times and working in a more structured manner. Getting the tone and color right before embarking on anything else really sets you up for success. I hope we see you back soon.

Hi Blake, thanks for your tutorials. I have enjoyed watching them so much. They are an inspiration for me and there are so many things for me to try and practice.

There is one question about installing the preset you provided. I right-clicked on the .ONPreset file and chose Open With ON1 Photo Raw. But it showed that it has installed 0 new file. Is there anything wrong?
