Product Spotlight – Hoya® Solas Infrared ND Filters

I cannot say enough great things about Hoya® Filters, both the company and products. You definitely need to check out the Solas Infrared ND Filters I talk about in this video.

Whether you are doing film work with a slow shutter speed or time lapse in broad daylight these are great. If you just want to slow down the wave action and get a misty mysterious look in your long exposures, again use these.
These filters have a really neutral color balance and also include an infrared filter. Modern sensors are so good that when we do really long exposures our sensors are starting to pick up infrared light and noise.  You’ll start seeing it in the purple and pink fringing in the shadows. This will induce headaches when trying to correct this in post-production. These filters will eliminate those headaches. Use them, you will love them.
Definitely take advantage of this deal we arranged for ON1 customers. For a limited time, you can save 25% on Hoya Filters by going to this webpage and use promo code ON1PROMO25 at checkout to receive your exclusive ON1 discount*. Hurry, this deal expires on 9/1/2017.

*Ships to US addresses only. Offer ends September 1, 2017. In stock items only. Excludes close-out filters.

I’d like to move from a variable ND filter to maybe the Hoya Solas series. What would be a good one to start with – or maybe even 2? For Nikon D7100 with 18-300 77 lens.

The filters I regularly carry are an HD3 Polarizer (which can act as about a 1.5 stop ND as well), and then 4, 6, and 10 stop Solas NDs. If I had to carry just two and a polarizer it would be the 4 & 10.

Hi Hudson, the Solas series seems interesting as my high quality B+W ND’s sometimes give the reddish casts. Appreciate the 25% promo but the link takes one to the general Hoya site and I don’t see a storefront where it would apply? Thanks.

Please disregard; clicked on the wrong link. One has to use the one embedded in your text and not the image. Thanks.

Hudson: I was looking at the 10 stop filter for 77mm, which is out of stock. Since this offer is for in stock items only, I guess we are out of luck, unless they reappear in the next few days.

I actually talked with a person and they said they didn’t know if or when they would get resupplied by Hoya. I’ve been watching for a 6 stop @ 77mm for about 4 weeks. I don’t think they ever had them.

Bruce, Gerald is talking about buying direct from Hoya with the discount code.
I’ll check with my contact at Hoya and see when they will get them in their store for you guys to exercise your discounts on them… Stand by.

OK, word is that the demand for the 10-stop was so high due to the eclipse that they are really behind on supply from Japan. They get stock every month, but they can’t guarantee when the backorders will catch up. I’ll keep you posted. Sorry about that.

Hudson: Love your ON1 videos; I’ve learned so much! Two questions about this one.
What is the make of the filter wallet that appears briefly? It appears to be small enough to put in a pocket – just what I’m looking for.
I remember reading user reviews on the Solas filters stating that they are very difficult to clean because they are not coated. What’s your secret for cleaning?

    Hey Ken,
I’ve not had that issue at all with them. I’ve been pretty careful with them as compared with a polarizer or UV that might stay on my lens hiking. For me the NDs go on at the last step in the shooting process and come off before recomposing. I have gotten salt spray on them and dropped one in the sand on the beach. A fast Zeiss wipe cleaned up the salt spray and letting the sand dry, blowing it off and Zeiss wipes took care of the dropped filter no sweat. I always have these with me. http://amzn.to/2wjhEVc

Hudson, I have been impressed with the information in your video’s from the Approaching the Scene. I have never been much at taking landscape photo’s, so I am ready to give it some serious practice. I have three lens, 300 F4, a cheap 50, and a 18-105 that came with my camera. I shoot D7000. My question is if you were only able to buy one Solas ND filter which stop would you choose? I also want some information on the Fluid head, not sure where I should ask that question.

Thanks Jim! Wow, that’s a tough one. I’d say either the 6 or the 10 stop. I know they are way backordered on the 10 stop though because of the eclipse. Maybe shoot for the 6 for now. it’s one I often reach for in nice light conditions to get really long exposures.
As to the fluid head, just hit me up via email at hi@hudsonhenry.com or on this forum thread: https://www.on1.com/forums/topic/hudsons-fluid-head-video/

I just spoke with them. They are working with the production folks in Japan to get stock back in place after the Eclipse. I guess there was a run on the good filters… We’ll work something out where Plus folks get a chance to take advantage of the discount when there is stock to order. 🙂
