Targeting Contrast & Detail Adjustments in RAW

I frequently see images where contrast, detail and clarity are applied image-wide and negatively impact soft elements, out of focus details and portrait subjects. In this video I’ll showcase how to use the non-destructive tools in Photo RAW to avoid doing this in your edits and to correct previously edited images.

Using Develop to Make Masking Simple

Often when I first open a raw photo I know that I’ll want to edit one part of it differently than another. Photo RAW’s non-destructive, masked workflow makes this easier than ever. A trick I often employ is starting by creating a mask before I do even the most basic of raw processing. By initially adjusting Develop’s basic tone sliders to unusual extremes, I can simplify creating a very useful mask to use later in the editing process. In this video, I’ll walk you through my process.

Create Dramatic Architecture Images

Learn how to blend photos into a panorama really fast and create a beautiful dramatic architectural image as the end-result. ON1 Photo RAW 2018 makes it really easy for us to blend our images together, so that makes it easier for me while shooting to not have to dread the post-production of shooting Panos. For this inspiration video, I’m going to take you on a trip from Istanbul to Manhattan and let you know my thought process for capturing with the camera all the way to post-production with ON1 Photo RAW 2018.

Wacom Pen Tablets & Photo RAW

Here’s a short video on how to best setup and use a Wacom pen tablet with Photo RAW. I’ll talk a bit about what tablets I use, and show you how I set them up and use them in my editing workflow. We’ve had a lot of questions about pen tablets in the Plus forums, which led us to create this video. Remember to use the Ask a Coach Plus forum if you have questions or things you want to learn more about. It drives this type of community content. Below the break are links to the tablets I showcase in this video. (more…)

Calibrating Your Monitor for Color & Tone Accuracy

There have been a number of questions in the Plus Community Discussion Forum this winter that relate to monitor calibration. For those of us who like to print, having your monitor calibrated for color and brightness is absolutely key to getting prints that look like your edited image on screen. In this video I’ll explain why and show you how I calibrate my monitors. Below the break are some links to the tools I use in this video below the break as well as some links to learn more and test your monitor’s performance without hardware. (more…)

Back to Basics: Setting Up Your Camera & RAW 2018

Happy holidays everyone. In this short video I quickly go through basic settings for both Photo RAW 2018 and your camera in different capture situations. First I talk about how to set up the camera differently depending on whether you are out to capture a landscape on your tripod or working with moving subjects and changing light conditions. Next I go into some of the basic preferences, settings and customization that I think you should consider using in Photo RAW 2018 before you even start editing an image.

Your Photo Our Look: December Edition

Happy holidays everyone! Here by popular demand is another Your Photo Our Look video. We asked the Plus community to submit their RAW images for us to edit up our way in Photo RAW 2018. In this edition I edit three Plus member’s photos. After raw processing the first image of a couple in a crowd, I use one of Photo RAW 2018’s stock Effects presets to give the photo a modern look and then add a Blur filter in Effects to make the couple stand out. Next I test the limits of Photo RAW’s ability to process an extremely high contrast landscape scene, boosting the shadows with a combination of local adjustments before removing some distractions and finish process the image in Effects without using presets. Finally I raw process, remove distractions and use one of my Winter Classic Effects presets to add character to a lovely winter scene of a barn in the woods. (more…)
